I recently got my cymbals from online, and love them. BUT THE SUSTAIN IS WAY TO LONG. i dont know how to tell my dad This. Is it possiable to return stuff from offline:angry:

suck it up, buddy. I'm sure they probably sound fine.
Cymbals always have sustain... unless you bought a splash cymbal, your going to have long sustain. It's a vibrating piece of metal.
billdrum
11-17-2006, 06:34 PM
That's why you try cymbals out in person before you buy them. Also, be aware of what kind of room you are playing in. If you are in a small room, or basement, the sustain may seem longer than it really is because of the acoustics of the room. I'd suggest you try them out in a large room, rehearsal area, or stage before you make a final judgement.
BTW, what cymbals are they?

They're Meinl Classics IIRC.

Check the webby you got it from's return policy. It has to be online legally, so it's there somewhere. Unless it was ebayed..

Long sustain is good, its better than little sustain anyway, I have a cymbal with short sustain and it just doesnt cut the music at all.

Meh. I like my cymbals not to cut.
A lot.
I have one cymbal that cuts......

Hmm experiment how you are striking the cymbal....i find that if you dont some cymbals right the overtones dont even out.
Take your cymbals outside and give them a listen
Its not the wash that is a problem , the wash sounds nice in a mix , and people mostly hear the fundamentals in a live gig

My favorite cymbal makes sound for an absurd amount of time after being struck -- something like 8 minutes.

after crashing my Zildjian A med ride... I swear it sustains for at least 5 min
sustain is good, your just having trouble adjusting to a new cymbal

Yeah I had a Camber 16" crash and got a 16" A Custom Projection to replace it. I bought it from GC and tried it b4 I got it. I like it there, but when I got home I thought holy crap, this has uber long sustain. I just had to get used to a crash that actually had a good sound and not a crappy Camber.

They are paiste alphas. The long sustain doesnt sounf right with any of my songs(ex. ain't talkn'bout lov, enter sandman) I might return them and get fast cashes. How long can I keep it before I can not return them, there 1 day old. I upgraded from solar, and they have NO sustain, that might be why.

Seriously dude, you want the sustain. You've been using Solar cymbals, which have no ring, no sound and no character. You really need to move on from this. Ring and sustain is what you want, because it'll make you sound damn sexy when you play live.
Take this from me, yeah? Cool.

He used a full gretsch set on black album too

People who complain about long sustain obviously have no live playing experience. If they ring too much to your ears, keep them - Theyll be just right once the band cranks up around you.

Solars are Anti-Cymbals, so better get used to sustain because that is how real cymbals sound ;)
Lars also played Sabian Cymbals in alot of recordings and the black album was recorded with a black panther snare (see the coincidence? ;) ) - all that proves the man has taste after all.
Talos

If you want a Lars sound then you want sustain, he uses Zildjian cymbals firstly.

Did lars have his endorsment with Tama back in 91 though?
And anyway, players with endorsments usually only use their kits when playing live. You can use anything in the studio really...
Talos
11-18-2006, 06:12 AM
Yeah he did have an endorsment. In that pic on the last page, the blue kit, thats actually a Starclassic Maple with two Gretsch bass drums and floor toms, the toms are Starclassics though and the snare is a Tama Bell Brass.

11-18-2006, 07:43 AM
Ok, TS, what cymbals were you using before? If you had stock cymbals or some trash like that then the reason you don't like your new ones is because you aren't used to how real cymbals sound! They're probably a lot louder than you're used to as well!
And don't put tape on them for fcuk sake!

If you dont like the cymbals and cant do anything with them, but a big crack in them, that cuts the sustain down a lot. But then youre ruining a perfectly fine number of cymbals.

Could you not try maybe getting felts that are slightly larger in circumferance and tightening the nut on your cymbal stands more. I find the looser they are tightened the longer the sustain. Just dont have them really tight as this can cause damage near the bell of the cymbal.
Also, a friend of mine actually uses cheap sponges, he buys them cuts them into like 4'' squared and puts them underneath the cymbal near the edge. this stops the sustain slightly. If you do try this, try and buy sponge that is of similar colour to your cymbals. so you dont have big blue squares under it lol. Fortunatly most sponge comes in yellow or beige, so they are of similar colour.
