Jordan, these guys were trying to be cool and help you. We need certain information to be able to properly give some helpful advice. With what you told us, everyone would just be posting what they like... which could be completely opposite from your tastes.
ok, so funk to metal..... that says to me... Wah, Distortion, maybe Synth.....
best bet, if you have no experience with individual effects... go multi. Inwhich case, with your budget i hear the Boss GT-6 (8?) is good. If you dont wanna push that much into a single unit, the digitech bp200 is good. i've got one, and its helped me learn all the effects.

so how about we agree we're all gay and jerk off to gay animal photographs, or what have you.....
