I Finally got Pics for my Custom painted bass...
I am in a band called Pikkel Pharm Chronicles - http://myspace.com/pikkelpharmchronicles
and i bought a purple yamaha bass from a friend, hand sanded the Whole thing... and got my Talented Artsy Sister to paint it...
then I Clear Glossed it
And i found the coolest knobs at Radio Shack for $2 a peice!
The reason there is a "Secret Ice Cream Cone" on the back is cause my parents own an Ice Cream store called Dairy Queen... so it was an inside joke
Can't wait to see everyone else's

it's a known fact that it is the best art school in the world... you can only get in if you have a full scholarship and they base it on talent and grade.
They accept 15 people in the US for early desicion out of 1400 ppl
and they take 40 ppl from other countries per year...
i don't want this to turn into a big discussion, all i am saying is if you ask a person who wants to go to a college for Art in the NYC region... they probably want to go to Cooper Union

I was thinking the same - don't get me wrong, it's effective, and it's by no means bad... but it's not "full scholarship to the best and most selective artschool in the WORLD" good.

But to carry on the analogy, this isn't about using a specific technique all the time. It's about playing well - no matter the technique.
Apologies to Kevinsaw - your bass does look good, it's got a fun pop-rock look to it. The only reason my eyebrow raised (and that I then pointed out the thread to Nya, whose opinions I trust on good art-schools...) was your great emphasis on BEST.

but whose to judge if thats what she was going for? i mean if thats the vision she had for that bass, then we will never know if she executed it well, because we cant see in her brain. i mean escher did some simple work as well, and then some reallly complex stuff as well

So what?
Being a good artist isn't just about having good ideas, it's also about getting them down on the paper - or bass - well. It doesn't make a difference if she meant to do something better.

I guess that's possible - but it's not actually holding the ice-cream, just hitting it, and a some of the proportioning on the tentacles is weird - oddly lumpy. Admittedly it's not fair to judge her on just one piece, and the overall effect is quite good, but I still would have expected better from someone in the best artschool ever.
Kevinsaw - I don't suppose we could see a few more pieces she's done?

i mean im not sure if i think shes an excellent artist, im just saying we cant judger her on that, because we cant see what she was trying to create, that may very well be what she was going for.
Wintermute
11-16-2006, 06:28 PM
Ok, so we basically agree - but I can't help but wonder if she DID mean for the tentacle to just be hitting the ice-cream, and for some odd lumps in the tentacles - why?
I would be very interested in seeing more of her work, because presumably she must be very good - having checked it out a little that school IS ludicrously hard to get into, whatever else can be said about it, so there must be something good going on. :)

I have to agree with you on all accounts. I dont think it is fair to judge of that, it could of been a rush job. I mean, i am on one of the best art foundation courses in the UK, and i make some lower then standard work. Dont get me wrong, its real good, but her other stuff may be well better.

When I'm playing solo.. yes.. I think I do at least a little.
In a band, no.
I understand what you are saying about that being her intent, but I dont know.. my first impression was just that it wasn't that impressive, for someone who goes to "the best art school in the world". It looks like it could have been done by someone whose only experience was high school art classes.

Octopuses have arms, not tentacles. Tentacles are longer than arms, and they usually only contain suckers on the tips of the tentacle.

its a lot easier than everyone will tell you.
all you really need is a chisel, MAYBE a hammer, sandpaper, wood filler and laquer.

Please don't attempt this on a bass that you can't live without!!

I'll be doing it on my squier, the one pictured in the casual.
With a Yamaha TRB6 and an Ibanez sr505 as my other 2 basses.
