on guitars like the manson rust relic (and other mansons) seen in this thread http://board.muse.mu/showthread.php?t=26127 , what is used to make it look like they're rusted? i recently saw some spraypaint at my hardware store that are faux stone spraypaint bottles http://www.misterart.com/g8415/Krylon-Make-It-Stone-Faux-Finishing-Spray.htm
do they use something like that and put some sort of stain/tint on top?

i doubt it can be actual rust because the bodies are made from mahogany, and according to http://musegear.fobbedoff.net/ , they're not coated in anything, so i figure it must be some kind of paint. the only way i could think the rust is real is if there's some heavily metallic paint, which just isn't practical.

Actually, you could probably find a rusty piece of metal, sand off the rust, mix it into some epoxy or clear polyurethene and spray it.

just leave your guitar outside for a few days

umm... he's talking about the wood rusting i do believe...

but if he were talking about the metal parts on it that'll work

but i dont think that he was, he was just talking about the paint lookin like rust, sooo leavin it sit outside a couple days probably wouldnt work it'll just make everything else rusted and any unfinished wood damp beyond repair if it rains

if i recall, the way that "Mr Manson" did it was literally dipping it in chrome or whatever and just let it rust. Im not totally sure if you can just "Paint" it in steel or iron, but i guess it could be done. Thats what i would look into anyways.

Hope that helps

Rum Monkey, that's a good idea, but i don't see how it's possible. the chroming process (from what i've seen) involves acidic liquids, corrosive chemicals, and high temperatures, all of which would most likely destroy the wood.

i think i'll just let some aluminum rust and put a sheet on the body, then spray it with some poly.

Yeah, i looked into it a bit more.

Aparently, you would have to spray the wood with a metallic finish. Or somthing with metal in it. Then it said somthing about a bath, Which im presuming is full of chrome and the chemicals etc.

But yeah, way you suggested sounds much easier.

what type of guitar is it???

And you better post some pictures when you're done :thumb:

haha yea i'll post pics when i get around to doing this project. it's either gonna be on my strat, or if i get a body blank, a custom guitar. i'm undecided right now because to use my strat, i'd have to have a trem block (i accidentally routed out the spring holding piece of wood :p), but if i did that with a piece of wood, i might as well buy a body blank.

also, to anyone who can answer this- i want to wire my olp mm-2 like a true MM, but with my own diy 'tone circuit'. my idea was to wire the humbucker to 1 pot for volume, and then have bass, mid, and treble pots with different value capacitors. would this evem be worth it/actually make a 'tone circuit'? (and yes, i'm gonna make room by putting the input jack on the side of the body). if this will work, can someone make a diagram?

edit: guess i should just make a new thread.
