So I been trying to find a well priced 78 Rick 4003 in good shape to replace the one I had and sold due to my now ex-wife.

Since now she is an ex-wife I want another one, but I can't find a 78 that isn't garbage.

I found a 90 Rick 4003 in immaculate condition. Fireglo Black, perfect mint condition with excellent working electronics. The dude is askin' 895.00 USD.

I would be pickin this bad boy up sinec he lives close so no shipping. It comes with the hardshell case.

Now, I've asked around and most agree it's an awesome price. I wanted to run this by my most favorite bass community before I seal the deal.

So what say you guys?

I would buy it, and if you've already spent a great deal of time looking for a 78, then I think it might be time to give up. Unless you're really, really patient, then you might as well wait anyway.

Wait a sec, which are you replacing? If it's the wife, I'd look for a newer model ;)

LOL!

I see how I worded that.

Funny!

So I'm gonna buy it. If I ever do find a 78 I'll just buy that one too.

Thanks guys.

why are you looking for a 78 and not just used ones in general?

are the 78's substantially different?

There is no "real" difference. The '78 I had was just an awesome bass. It had monster tone and I suppose it's just more sentiment than anything. They all sound very much the same, the 4003 series. Now, if it was a 4001 I'd be kicking myself over and over.

I know I bought the bass from the original owner, and it was one of the first 4003s made if you can believe it. Rickenbacker didn't really introduce the 4003 series until 1979, as it was built for roundwound strings since the 4001s only came with flatwounds. So it was really a 79, but the dude I bought it from swore he bought it in 78. Who knows the truth.

I regret selling it. I'll never forgive myself for selling that as well as my 70s P bass. I suppose I'm just trying to get those years back and somehow that 78 Rick would do the trick, but I'll take the 1990 one for now.
