i was reading some of what you guys had to say in the earlier J.F. thread, and i felt so strongly i needed to make another thread....so here it is
i own every frusciante solo cd and some live material and all of it is great. i consider him one of the best straight-up no bull**** musical artists of our time. john is so passionate about his music, thats all he honestly cares about. his life has been devoted to expressing what he feels in his soul through music. i’ve never seen someone so into what they do than john is. if he was not associated with rhcp, and like pitchfork and sh*t put him on the hype train, indie hipsters would look at him like a god. but sadly, people cant be open-minding enough for this...and also people cant make thier own decisions, media..among other things have to make decisions for them.
and whats even wrong with rchp? i love them personally, but i guess they are too mainstream for people around here to like. i enjoy the most experimental indie wierd obscure sh*t ever, but i can also rock hard to the peppers. its so ridiculous that people just cant enjoy music for being music. they have to associated it with whats "cool", or mainstream or not, etc. ...and well that ends my rant

I love most of John Frusciante's solo ****.
RHCP is probably one of my least favorite bands ever.

We're not all mindless people who take Pitchfork's every word as gospel you know. Some of us hate everything Pitchfork likes because I'm an individual.

whats the first album i should hear? (to anyone) ive been looking to get into john frusciante.
also, thread starter, i know what you mean about how sometimes when people get into indie (which is all well and good, i find the music i like the most in indie) they tend to not be able to appreciate popular music as much as they did before. its still good music... its just that more people enjoy it than do enjoy sharks keep moving or what the hell ever. i can still rock out to rhcp too, i enjoy 311, i enjoy incubus, etc. now there are a lot of bands that i cant really get back into (linkin park, offspring (most of their stuff anyway), most numetal) but if i can enjoy it while i am listening to it then it doesn't and shouldn't really matter how many other people also enjoy it
will somebody please post in my three-mile pilot thread
more specifically, listen to and react to the music. i wanna hear what you guys think of them i dont hear you talking about them and they are a band that i like very much

I don't really see how people can hate RHCP. But some people also hate Sublime, which also completely boggles my mind.
If you can't enjoy BloodSugarSexMagik, something could be wrong with you.

Frusciante's best album is Smile From The Streets You Hold, that's a ****ing masterpiece.
Same with To Record Only Water For 10 Days.
Curtains rules as well.

yes it's the chorus, and i like that song too until the bridge where the chorus comes in and you're just like "wow, gay key change and gay singing"

ill give you that, it is a very predictable key change.
the song isnt particularly unique, but its good

no it's not about being predictable it just sounds retarded and totally ruins the song

I like John Frusciante solo and RHCP, I don't see how people could really bag on either.
John Frusciante doesn't make music that I like. RHCP doesn't make music that I like. When someone's involved in two things that I dislike, then I think it's safe to say that I dislike them for reasons other than them being too mainstream (which is a dumb way to describe something). He expresses himself through his music, sure. But I disagree with that expression, and it's OK. So what's up?

I have the exact opposite opinion, all of his music expresses personality, to a degree that you could feel as if you know him through his music, just listen to "Carvel" off of Shadows Collide With People or "Dying Song" off of Brown Bunny.
As for what to check out from him I would recommend taking a listen to Shadows Collide With People from his solo work and from RHCP I think his best is Blood Sugar Sex Magik. These would probably best highlight his music but you would have to listen to it all to understand how good he really is.

Fact: most RHCP fans have a tenuous grasp of English grammar, at best.

Btw, who is in your avatar?
And to sgrevs, yes Niandra Lades is an excellent album. I was listening to Ataxia last night and I decided it's a pretty great album. I'm surprised it hasn't gotten more praise around here.

His solo stuff does rule.
Every album contains something special. His early work reminds of Bright eyes with better guitarwork. His voice was not very good at that time. He has growed, matured to be a great singer. All RHCP fans should check out 'shadows collide with people'. All indie fans should check out 'Niandra lades and usually just a t-shirt'. Everybody that likes acoustic pop should listen 'curtains' and if you like great music listen to 'the will to death'. If you're a new wave fans check out 'to record only water for ten days'.
Now I don't say that these genres are entitled to the albums, but I see some comparisons.
And really he just makes pop music. With depth however, but they are really pop songs. Just like Interpol makes pop songs, just like radiohead makes pop songs.

I'm pretty sure it's Will Oldham on the cover of one of the Bonnie Prince Billy albums.

It does. And that's Bonnie "Prince" Billy.
I like Curtains I guess, but it's the only one I've listened to. I just have such little motivation to after sitting through Stadium Arcadium a few months ago on a car ride. I have no desire to even acknowledge the dude's art at this point.

As a true scholar, I'm telling you now that the sentence did not make sense. And the fact that you're judging John Frusciante's entire musical career off of Stadium Arcadium is laughable. I absolutely agree that Stadium Arcadium is a bad album, and I've actually (sort of jokingly) theorized that John only contributed to it in the way he did in order to appease Flea, as Flea was quite upset about not being able to have his way on things on By the Way. If you listen to A Sphere in the Heart of Silence or Smile from the Streets You Hold and tell me it's anything like Stadium Arcadium, you're absolutely crazy.
