I'm a huge Replacements fan, but I've yet to really check out any of Westerberg's solo stuff (or Grandpaboy). Which albums of his are a solid, safe bet? I've heard some lukewarm reviews, and others that straight-up bash most of his solo material, so I don't really know where to start. Help a whiteboy out?

most Replacements songs are essentially Westerberg solo compositions, with the only real difference being the other musicians he surrounds himself with at the time.
but the best part of those songs is usually the lyrics, so i am interested as well. what do the solo albums sound like, compared to the Mats?

Westerberg's solo albums always get terrible reviews because they're not Replacements albums. It's like a reverse Bob Dylan effect, where he gets great reviews simply for making an effort.
14 Songs is a decent album, but Suicaine Gratification is the best album he ever made, Replacements included. Eventually is less rocky than 14 Songs and not as good, and Folker is like Suicaine but like half as good. As a rule, Westerberg is worth listening to even when you know the music is crap.

I'd go with 14 Songs. I dont own it, but some guy at the local record store said it's one of his favorite albums, and I've read some good reviews.

That drummer is hilarious.
I can't get into any Replacements pre-Let it Be. It's kinda boring.
Good video by the way. The other guitar player has a goofy haircut.

I agree. I tend to ignore their earlier records, because LIB is so damn amazing, they could've sounded like Fall Out Boy on the earlier records and I still would've dug Let it Be.

The earlier records aren't nearly as genius, but there are still some amazing standalone tracks, such as "Within Your Reach", or "If Only You Were Lonely". And of course "Color Me Impressed".
