So I'm getting into Spike Lee films, and this weekend I rented Do The Right Thing.
It's a movie he did in the late '80s. It takes place in New York on the hottest day of the summer, and it's about racial tensions between the Italians, Asians, Blacks, etc. It's got John Turturro, Spike Lee, Danny Aeillo (sp?), and Samuel L. Jackson.
Really good commentary on racism. Not as brutal or graphic as American History X, but still as important a message is presented.
Anyone seen it or have an opinion on it?
Terrible movie. Spike Lee is such a raging douchebag racist, it's insane. This movie had no message, don't get it twisted.

Personally I'm not a fan of Spike Lee, find most of his movies boring and pointless. But I guess I can understand why people like him.
I watched it about a year ago, wasn't the mute dude beaten to death for playing his boombox? **** like that doesn't happen.

Sal (the store owner) kept yelling at Radio Raheem to turn off his music, and they kept yelling at each other until he took a baseball bat and smashed up the radio. Then it turned into a fistfight, and the cops came, and the cops beat Raheem to death.

He was talking **** and being a completely disrespectful piece of ****, so he got his radio smashed and he got called a ******, so that was Spike Lee's way of saying it was ok that Sal got his store and life destroyed because he got pushed past the point and said something stupid one time.
**** Spike Lee.

I really enjoyed it. Found it to be quite tense at times, and hard to really get behind any one character as most are just decent people in extraordinarily difficult situations and because of this end up doing less than honorable things.

The black community is far from being portrayed as heroic. They have their problems, they have their racist attitudes, too.
Also, the riot starts after Raheem is killed, not after his radio is smashed. As far as most of the involved people were concerned, they saw cops come in, go for the black guy and kill him.
I think you've made this far too simplistic.

I think you've made this far too simplistic. The riots start because Raheem attacks Sal, then the cops come and accidently kill Raheem when he's violently resisting arrest. Then the cops leave and they destroy Sal's shop for no reason, and then they turn around and most of them want to destroy the Korean's store.
And, as you may recall, Spike Lee puts up the Malcom X quote about defending yourself, as his justifying the violence against Sal by saying it was self defense. Spike Lee is as racist as he is self righteous.

He puts up a quote by Martin Luther King, too, if I recall. Or was it Ghandi?
His message is not strictly pro-violence.
