Well, for the past decade or so, It seems to me that southern rock is all but completely dead. I'd like to be proven wrong here.

Anyway, now that the motivation for this thread has been shared, I'd figured we'd use this as a catch all discussion for southern rock, past and present.

Right now my playlist is filled with Govt. Mule. Derek Trucks is their guitarist, no?

Warren Haynes is in Govt. Mule. I'm not a big fan, but a lot of people think they're pretty good.

As for the latest southern rock band (besides Mule), I'd go with the Black Crowes. They were around in the early 90's, so that's almost in this decade.

Warren Haynes is the guitarist for Gov't Mule, but both him and Trucks play with the Allman Brothers Band.

Widespread Panic has some hints of Mule and a southern rock style, especially on 'Till the Medicine Takes. Dyin' Man and Bear's Gone Fishin for example are really great southern/blues/country rock songs.

So I'm browsing napster, and apparently Zakk Wylde is a southern rocker.

The southern sound in any music usually completely puts me off.

Way back from Skynyrd and CCR to Pantera and Black Label Society... maybe I just hate the sound of the blues scale in general, but I can't stand this stuff anymore.

Southern rock started out good

then it became horribly cliche and irritating

in a matter of a few years

I call Halfway to Gone southern rock (kind of), and they're worth checking out. Though I'm probably wrong, I find I don't care too much.

How'd I miss this? Haha. Anything with a good southern vibe to it in rock and metal is good with me :)

I was about to say, "Wait a minute, Wotan's a rascist, why hasn't he posted in this thread yet?"

I'll check out American Minor. I wasn't really a fan of Widespread Panic, but I listened to some Black Crowe stuff (I had never really given them a chance) and twas okay.

American Minor is just like Silvertide, who's just like Jet, who's just like Wolfmother, that stuff all sucks.

I never heard Silvertide and I aint a fan of Jet or wolfmother (better than jet, tho), but IMO American Minor do a good job of bringin back that classic vibe. I'm a classic rock kid at the core, but listening to the same albums over and over gets a bit old, good to mix it up with some new stuff. I think they do a good job of recreating that vibe without sounding like they just ripped off some songs and sounding completely artificial.

Skynyrd is awesome.

The Allman Brothers are pretty good.

Most other southern rock I find annoying.

Yeah I would agree with that. Same goes for Superjoint Ritual, Pantera and well you get it now, but I would call it metal, but you all might be talking about something else...
