i will see them on 19.11.2006 - so in 1 1/2 weeks

right now i listen to Tool - no Quarter (Led zep cover) and before i listend to Apocalyptica - Schism (tool cover); both are sooo great.

but what i want to ask: What songs can i expect being played on the show? how is the show? the "movies" in the background and so on..

Justin Chancellor is such a cool bass player and you can really hear his talent come through in songs like:

Disposition
Schism
The Pot
Lateralus
Reflection
Aenema
Third Eye
Forty Six & 2
etc.

Here's what the setlist might look like:

Stinkfist (Extended)
The Pot
46 & 2
Jambi
Schism (Extended)
Lost Keys
Rosetta Stoned
Sober
Lateralus
Vicarious (w/Intro)
Aenima

That was from a show in August, and from what I've heard they've been mostly sticking to the same songs. It's possible that they would switch a few older ones out, but who knows.

I agree! Probably one of the best shows I've seen next to APC's halloween show.

Anyway, saw yesterday that Tool are gonna be on Bruce Dickinson's radio show on Dec.9th. I've got to put down a reminder for this..otherwise I'll forget.
TOOL will be IRON MAIDEN frontman Bruce Dickinson's guests on Saturday, December 9 during Bruce's weekly BBC 6 Music radio show, aptly named "Rock Show". Listen to the program live via the Internet between 9:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m. (midnight) U.K. time (between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. EST) at BBC.co.uk.

Tool's really grown on me lately. About 5 years ago I liked them, but when I went through the whole "pure metalhead" sh*t, I considered them not heavy enough for me.

I love 'em now though. I've got the 4 main albums too...

Listening to 10,000 Days the other day, Ive come to the conclusion that the bass work is one of the best things on the record and keeps it interesting instrumentally, as Adam Jones' guitar work is a bit bland. I know Danny is a fantastic drummer and his rhythyms are also part of the appeal, but as a guitarist I tend to listen to the strings mostly.

I think they'd be too afraid of ****ing up if they started improv'ing.

They actually do quite a few jam session-style stuff between some songs...Before Sober they did some, and the one before Vicarious is pretty amazing. Maynard starts wanking around on a synth while Danny beats the shi' outta his kit and Adam and Justin just go stand artfully close to their amps. I dug it.

magicbus

I like Bottom!

Good parts:
1:48 through the whole "**** adds up" part (awesome)
Henry Rollins is cool
Adam's riffs at 5:05
Maynard's scream at 5:52

So many cool parts!

But yea Undertow is really good. I just started realizing how good it was recently, and I've been listening to it a lot. I like Disgustipated too. "This is necessary" sounds cool, and Reverend Maynard's stuff is funny.

Dr. Jake Destructo
11-11-2006, 02:46 PM

And of course the scream is wicked, it's Maynard. :p Dead inside, oh yeah.

What mode are songs like Stinkfist, 46&2, Ticks & Leeches, and The Grudge in? Stinkfist and T&L are D minor, but since they're actually in the key of E, it's some different mode. :-/

Isn't the minor pentatonic scale the same thing as the minor scale, except that the former has two fewer notes?

Dr. Jake Destructo
11-11-2006, 02:58 PM
Yes. It makes a big difference.

the riff to Rosetta Stoned, which is three notes ascending the Dm pentatonic scale, sounds a lot better to me than the riff to Bottom which is three notes ascending up the Dm scale. It's probably just me, heh.

Kage
11-11-2006, 02:59 PM
Yeah, I was just making sure. Two notes can make all the difference in the world.

Still, I am so sick of the minor pentatonic scale. Tool uses it well, but that explains why I only listen to them in small but intense bursts.

Dr. Jake Destructo
11-11-2006, 03:01 PM
Yeah, I think the only time they deviate from the Dm pent. on 10kd is Wings for Marie which is in Dm I think. :p Talk about being in a rut.

Kage
11-11-2006, 03:03 PM
It's so strange that they don't write in any other keys. It doesn't make sense that they're still writing good songs with the same notes over and over.

They've got some sort of special talent, I guess. Most of the bands I listen to these days can't stick to one scale for a single song, if they're playing on a scale at all.

Dr. Jake Destructo
11-11-2006, 03:06 PM
I'm not positive on all the songs from Undertow, but every other song is in D. :-/

magicbus
11-11-2006, 03:09 PM
Parabol/Parabola and Prison Sex are both in drop B/E tuning, but everything else is in drop D, which explains why are the songs are in the key of Dm. Its easier to just land on the D string when that's the key of the song also.

Kage
11-11-2006, 03:10 PM
That's true, but they're just being lazy. Plenty of people play in different modes other than E in standard tuning.

And, why not use a D maj scale while the bass implies some minor seventh chords and get some kind of phrygian thing going or something? Vary it up a little, I say!

Dr. Jake Destructo
11-11-2006, 03:11 PM
Yeah, but isn't Parabola still in Dm? :p

Kage - One would think it would get boring.

For some reason Tool in the major key is something I can't process at the moment.

magicbus
11-11-2006, 04:10 PM
Yea I don't know about Tool in a major key. The closest thing to that would probably be "The Gaping Lotus Experience".

Jake-Not sure, I guess it could be

Kage
11-11-2006, 04:18 PM
If you play a major scale over some minor 7th chords, it ceases to major key. It becomes something cool and bizarre.

I was thinking about that the other day, actually. The opening/main bass line in 46&2 implies D Locrian (essentially C minor or E flat major starting on D), but when Adam plays the D power chords, the A is natural, which kinda messes with the tonality.

Dr. Jake Destructo
11-11-2006, 06:06 PM
The only thing that's different from the Dm key in 46&2 is the flatted second isn't it?

The bass line doesn't imply D Locrian, it implies D Phrygian (with a raised 3rd), or G harmonic minor. That's why the natural A works.

The only thing that's different from the Dm key in 46&2 is the flatted second isn't it?

Kage - tab out some minor 7th chords for me plz? I'm trying to construct them myself but I'm sorta lazy, y'know. :p

Aight.

Most of tool songs are all related to the key of D somehow.

It's like 46&2 and The Grudge..Phrygian maybe? It's the Cm scale but since it's rooted in D it's technically just a different mode of the major scale.

So really the song is in Emaj.

Well, I just got back last night at 3am from the Point in Dublin, after about 18 1/2 hours out of the house (due to school), and I had just witnessed my greatest ever experience at the Point when I saw Tool.

Mastodon were starting up and they did their thing. I didn't have a clue who these guys were, but after their performance, I was interested to hear more from them.

Anyways, Tool came on at about 9-ish or so, and the crowd literally exploded when the guys started to come on stage.

Here was the setlist:

Stinkfist
Forty Six & 2
Jambi
Schism
Lost Keys (Blame Hofmann)
Rosetta Stoned
The Pot
Wings For Marie
10,000 Days
Lateralus
Vicarious
Ænema

Inbetween 46 & 2 and Jambi, Maynard said there was good news and bad news.

He said the good news is that Adam Jones and Justin Chancellor, both with english names, which got a boo from the crowd, and then he said something to slag off the English, mainly from what I heard, Keenan and Carey are Irish names. That got a big cheer from the crowd.

And the bad news...

There is no bad news.

Once after Vicarious had finished, Maynard did his usual "thank you for your support" stuff. He also said hopefully they will come back in the summer. Maybe by then Adam and Justin will have their names changed into something more Irish.

Peace...out.

(Hey, hey, hey, hey...)

I absolutely love every second of it. Highlight was the Wings/10,000 Days song as everyone was looking in awe at the lazer lights.

And also, inbetween Rosetta Stoned and The Pot, all four members were sitting close together at the stage. Justin lit up a lighter to the crowd, which then the crowd started to light up their lighters. That was really cool.

So anyways, my first ever Tool concert and I absolutely loved it. A bit annoyed that they didn't play anything from Undertow and Opiate, but that didn't matter to me.

Now all I have to do is wait for the summer so I can get another ticket the instant the next tour is announced.

i painted a copy of that for my art course once. when i find it i will take pictures. it is layered and it meant to be lit from behind.

here is what i posted after seeing them last night on the tool navy forums, probably not as much on the actual performance as there should be, but meh:

wow, last night was AMAZING. i got there at about 3.20 and the queue was tiny, i was really amazed. i sat there drinking cheap cider by myself (tramp) and made friends with the coolest people in the queue. unfortunately, before my boyfriend turned up, i managed to lose his ticket, but the guys outside who worked there were really helpful, and because they had seen the ticket before, they gave him a wristband anyway.

so yea, inside, WE WERE ON THE BARRIER!! right in front of adam. brilliant. we met more cool people in there, they were really nice despite the fact that one of the guys was scarily coming onto me. a couple of guys up from us decided to piss all over the barrier, but the guards didn't say anything.

we suffered mastodon, and i hate to be rude, but it really was suffering. their sound was terrible, but i can't imagine it being much better if it was any different. and although this has nothing to do with their music, they really need to learn to shave. still, some twat behind us decided to hit my boyfriend over the head for putting his finger up at them.

then, after mastodon, because my boyfriend didn't want to lose his place, he decided to pee in an empty cup, and he got chucked out. i faked an asthma attack to try and get him back in, but it wouldn't work, so he had to buy a ticket off a tout for another tenner outside. grr.

but as for tool themselves, absolutely ****ing amazing. wow. highlights for me were probably swamp song (i wasn't expecting that), lateralus, wings pt1/2 and rosetta stoned. wings could not have been any more amazing, i loved the combination of such a fantastic and emotional pair of songs with the lasers. the way they opened up at the beginning gave you a real sense of judith-marie's presence.

i wish maynard had come to the front (i am sure he did at hammersmith). i am so so happy because i waved at adam at the end and he waved back. and their whole hug thing was too cute.

i was pretty shocked at the people around me, being at the front, they must have queued for a fair amount of time, but none of them seemed to know the words to anything.

was the gas mask for the aenima noise, or was it just another part of maynard's interesting costume thing?? the jacket was great, i want it.

the amount of empty seats was more than i had expected, it didn't seem right. the stewards were absolute nazis for the most part, i will be avoiding wembley arena unless i can help it in future.

cannot wait for summer. i will so be there.

did anyone notice how they put the borat theme tune on loop after the gig??

Zedthephish

The gas mask is Maynard's reaction to the more relaxed smoking laws overseas. You guy's can smoke, he can protect his voice.(that's basically the reasoning.)

But you guy's got swamp song! I saw them twice on this tour, only to get the same setlist, oh well.

Ok, so my brother's friend, who has never heard Tool before, wants to get into them. My brother came to me to make a mix for him. I never thought I'd make a Tool mix (you should really listen to the albums in full), but I wasn't about to burn 6 CDs for some kid I don't know. After careful planning, my friend (huge Tool fan) and I (huge Tool fan) came up with a pretty good mix.

1. Stinkfist
2. Eon Blue Apocalypse
3. The Patient
4. Hush
5. Right In Two
6. The Pot
7. Schism
8. H.
9. Lateralus
10. Disposition
11. Vicarious
12. Jambi
13. Aenema

When choosing and ordering songs, we wanted to make sure we covered most of Tool's career, covered the diversity of their songs, got a nice emotional contrast going on between the tracks, checked out the transitions between each track, and wanted to fill up a whole disc (the total time of the mix is 1 hour, 19 minutes and 44 seconds, leaving a total of 16 seconds unused.)

I was really happy with the turnout, so I thought I'd post it here. I'm gonna listen to it all the way through later, see how it sounds.

Thanks to everyone's responses.

In regards to Reflection, I definitely wanted to include it, as it is one of my favorite tracks off of Lateralus. I decided not to because it's pretty long, and in addition to subtracting from the total disc length, it's length might turn off the first time listener.

I decided not to include Rosetta Stoned because A) it's pretty lengthy and a first time listener might not want to sit through it, and B) we felt it didn't work without Lost Keys before it. Lost Keys just added to the overall length of the disc, and we felt it wasn't worth including in an "essential" mix.

Also, thanks Kage :p

---from some German magazine that interviewed Tool just recently.

By the way, have you guys heard that supposed Tool cover of NIN's "Terrible Lie"? It's not really them, right? I don't think it sounds much like Maynard but some people insist it is. Anyway, whoever it is...terrible cover. I didn't like it.
So here's a page where you can find the track anyway.

I can't be bothered finding the link ;p

Not that this really matters to the band or any one else for that matter, but just thought I'd mention that grammy nominations were announced today and Tool are up for 2 (Hard Rock performance and Album Packaging). "Vicarious" is up against NIN's "Everyday is Exactly the Same"..which personaly I think is one of the weakest tracks on WT. They're also up against SOAD and Wolfmother, i think.

Anyway, doesn't matter if they win or not but I have to admit, it's always kinda nice to see one of your favorite bands pick up any award...even if they will go back and put it up somewhere in their bathroom like they do with their album plaques.

There's a Grammy for album packaging? That's pretty gay.

i saw tool in dublin there about 2 weeks ago, it was such an amazing gig.
set list was:
Stinkfist(extended)
46 & 2
Jambi
Schism(extended)
Lost Keys-Rosetta Stoned
The Pot
short break
Wings parts 1 & 2
Lateralus
Vicarious
Aenima.

i was hoping they'd play right in two (listening to it right now:)), and a bit annoyed they dropped the undertow songs(they'd been switching between swamp song and sober) but i'm not gonna complain since it was my 1st time to see them, and i might see them again in the summer.
and i also like to mention how i only just realised how great justin is on "intension"

My favourite part of Intension is the breakdown, where it is only Adam playing.

It starts at 3:53, always makes me think. I love it.

There's no way 10kd could lose the packaging award.

Yeah, I really hope they do take the packaging award.
By the way, found a link to a brief Mike Patton interview where he expresses his dislike for Wolfmother...I know it's not Tool related but it's kinda funny.

Yo, I'm new to Tool... only album I have is Lateralus. It's pretty freakin sweet stuff. What album should I get next? I'm more into the heavier side than the ambience side (if I can call some of it that)... if you know what I mean.

Aenima or Undertow. Though its not like there are that many Tool albums to choose from.

Go with Aenima or the new one, 10K Days. They both have some heavy parts, but still have that proggish style to them. Undertow's the most aggressive, but it has 0% prog in it.

Dr. Jake Destructo
12-09-2006, 11:01 AM
Lateralus is pretty much their most mellow release to date; actually, it's probably the most inconsistent one because there are the extremely heavy moments, like Ticks and Leeches, but also some very intimate times in Disposition and most of The Patient, etc..

I'd reccomend Ænima, then 10kd, then Undertow, then Opiate.

Mike - I read a post on last.fm where somebody called Undertow a prog masterpiece.

magicbus
12-09-2006, 11:45 AM
I don't think I'd say Undertow has 0 prog elements (4 Degrees), but yea I'd definitely agree that it's there least proggish (excluding Opiate).

I hate when Tool do "Prog" tracks. I mean, I don't particularly like 10,000 Days/Wings for Marie, nor do I think it's cool that you buy an album and get Lipan Conjuring and Lost Keys right next to each other. And 5 minutes of Viginti Tres at the end.

I realise they're are more prog elements in their music.

I just hate the pretentiousness of some stuff they do.

Eon Blue Apocolypse?
Faaip De Oaid?

Most of the segues on Lateralus are really cool because they set the mood for the next track.

But the ones on Aenima can get pretty tedious.

There are only a few segues that I don't listen to. "Faaip De Oiad" and "Vigniti Tres" because they're both on the end of the album, and occasionally I'll skip "Message To Harry Manback" and "Cesaro Summability" cause they can get creepy.

Oh, I consider it an actual song, I just felt like mentioning it because it's a song that brings Aenima's listenability down for me a bit. Die Eir Von Satan is pretty much a song but for some reason it just doesn't push my buttons anymore. The problem with Aenima is that the strong-as-hell songs are punctuated by boring stuff. Otherwise I would listen to it a lot more often.
