can someone reccommend me good jazz trios that consist of drum, bass and piano? I really like john coltrane, but im trying to start a jazz band with just piano bass and drums.

Bill Evans trio, Brad Meldhau's trios, Chick Corea Akoustic Band, there are billions. As you get into listening to jazz you'll find it's a very common setup.

I was always as fan of the Red Garland Trio. Check out "Groovy". Oscar Peterson Trio was mighty hot as well. "Nigerian Marketplace" is a favorite of mine. "This here is Bobby Timmons" is great for a little soul jazz.

Keith Jarrett's Trio has put out some monsterous CDs. Mulgrew Miller's Trio is also excellent, check out the Live at Yoshi's releases. Kenny Barron, Kenny Drew, Kenny Werner, McCoy Tyner, and Michel Petrucciani all have great trio work. Herbie did some cool trio work with Carter and Williams too. Check out the album "Third Plane".

Kenny Drew trio has some great stuff. Especially the stuff with Orsted Peterson.

Oh man I want to play in a guitar/bass/drum trio
That'd be pretty tough if you ask me

Sweet, that's really the first "The Bad Plus" talk I've seen on this forum. Phenomenal trio there :)
Medeski, Martin and Wood is another, even though the keys are primarily electric (if that matters).

Green Light - even though instead of keys it's guitar...still a good jazz/fusion band though.
Oscar Peterson Trio (Ellis/Brown and Pass/Orsted-Pederson lineups)
Power of Three (Michel Petrucciani, Wayne Shorter, and Jim Hall)
Art Tatum Trio (Art Tatum, Lionel Hampton, and Buddy Rich)

Check out " Jazz Advance" by Cecil Taylor, it has some great trio work, although on some tracks there is a sax aswell.
