View Full Version : Musical Ignorance

I have an un-named friend who is so biased, that he believes that, since the 90's, there hasnt been any good music at all. So, how many people disagree (or agree) that there hasnt been any good music for 16 years? I want some people to reply so i can show him this.

Im not saying that Pre 90s stuff sucked, i love it, im just saying that there is music from the last 15 years that is perfectly awesome (oasis, pearl jam, coutless others) and from all genres of music too

I disagree completely. Especially today with the internet, there are so many bands popping up on myspace or purevolume and so many different styles of music out there that you have to be pretty closeminded to not find something you like.

Your friend is wrong.

Your friend might have been trying to suggest that "good" music isn't as popular/accessible as it was in decades previous- in which case I might sympathize. He might also be lamenting that the "Golden Age" of classic rock is over, which too is understandable.

But there is not a shortage of any kind.

I feel that music has been gradually getting better and better since the mid-80's, and that right now it's at the best it has been for twenty years.

Different eras will contain genres that appeal to certain people. For instance, I'm not big on new wave, thrash metal, hair rock, or punk, so the 80's don't appeal very much to me. I can still find music from that period that I do enjoy, however. I really like psychadellia, prog, jazz, blues, and folk- therefore I find the 60's -70's appealing to my tastes. I'm also into indie, alternative, and other modern styles, and hence my opinion of right now being the best time for music in twenty years.

It's all my opinion, of course. A lot of people love new wave and hate jazz.

But to say that no good music has come out of the last sixteen years is rediculous.

If we're talking about the state of things right now, then jazz, blues, and rap are the three genres that are absolutely NO WAY as strong as they were.

Jazz is at its best. Most people who say it's dead don't listen to anything beyond Miles Davis. Blues will never be as strong as it was in the '60's and '70s but surely better than any other era. Rap has been pretty constant from the '90s till today. People always seem to forget the ****ty 2 Live Crew's of the old days simply because they choose not to.

Rock and Metal are absolute **** today.
