Ability to play just about anything, making music flow for 10 minutes (or longer), having lyrics come secondary to the music (DT writes music first, then lyrics), key changes, odd time sigs. Stuff like that.
Wanking the fretboard, the keyboard, the drumkit, and the vocal chords.
Err....
I mean, for music to be progressive, it has to progress.
New riffs being constantly introduced, with repetitions appearing rarely in each song. The song structure generally doesn't follow the general pattern of:
Verse
Chorus
Verse
Chorus
Bridge
Solo
Verse
Chorus
Outro
but introduces different elements. Also, a lot of progressive bands incoporate avant garde concepts, such as borrowing very different styles of music.
