Hey fellas,
I thought perhaps we could use this thread to post everything that's upcoming and drum related.
Post upcoming performances, rehearsals, and even your current practise goals. It's nice to know where everyone's going with their art and how they plan on materialising goals.
I'm gonna start the ball rolling:
Today I set my kit up in the living room by the window overlooking the river, so I can hopefully get some nice kit shots for you guys very soon.
I have a piano lesson tonight, and after that a rehearsal with a new band im in called Coalition. You can check them out at http://www.myspace.com/whenwewerelostatsea .
Alot of this weeks practice is going to revolve around Stick Control on the pad, and shuffle/half-time shuffle grooves on the kit. The reason for this is i'm studying Blues Music at college this half-term.
I played a gig yesterday for Guy Fawkes night. It was with my funk/latin band called Soznak. I played mostly Timbales, but also a bit of Congas.
Some very exciting things are happening around the 13th of November, but i'll post that a bit later.

Ok, i'll go next:
I'm still using my 4pce Artist, buying a new crash and ride later on sometime, prob early next year, looking at a 17" K custom special dry and a Bosphorus 20" Trad ride.
I'm playing keys in an old-school funk band, so i bought an old fender rhodes piano which is such a sexy thing, we're playing originals and tunes by bands such as: George Clinton's bands (Parliament.Funkadelic), The Ohio Players, Sly and the Family Stone, The Meters, Kool and The Gang, James Brown and Herbie Hancock, I'll have audio soon hopefully.
I'm also writing progressive and alternative rock songs with a friend, we're currently recording an EP. I'm writing lyrics and music (with my friend who is doing the same), singing (backing mainly), playing kit and some piano and string arrangements depending on the song.
I'm practising jazz, funk, hip-hop and r&b beats/tunes on the kit. I'm also doing rudiment based grooves and some latin ostinatos and claves. On top of that, i'm working on stick control, rhythm section drumming and steve gadd's book. I'm also trying to improve my matched grip playing, as i play mainly trad.
Getting some gigs soon and i will get some audio recorded at them, of this funk band.

I guess it's my turn now. Today I have a drum lesson after baseball. We will work mainly on rudiments and all-region things. After that we will work on the book and then I go home! Woot lol my goals right now are to get better at rudiments and just become more focused and better period. I'm trying to set up a schedule so I can stay focues and can get things done.

Today me and my band are recording after school. It's just gonna be quick because we only need one song for a demo we need to give to someone. Good thread.

Finally, the time for me to clear my leaves and offs before I leave the army in 3 months' time, which equates to more free time for me to practice and play around on my kit!
Gigging later with my band, and I'm busy cleaning my cymbals.
I'm also meeting my friend on Friday to pick up his 14" stage hats.. I can't wait!

I had a drum lesson today. Was working through a grade 7 piece. Found it quite easy apart from some stupid open hi hat positions that were extended over like, 3 notes!
Tried to play earlier but my sister got all violent, i can only guess why.
Me and my mates are trying to start a band, but we need a lead gutiarist, and a place to practise, and that is becoming a problem.
I've been practising 7/4, 7/8 and 9/8 grooves recently.

I'm rocking my 4 piece, normal right handed setup. Still switching between my 18" crash and my other ride cymbal. The 18" finds it's way onto the stand mroe than the ride, though.
I've been working alot on gooves in 7 and from Stanton Moore's "Take It To The Street", then putting the two together every once in a while.
I bought a Vic Firth pad the other day, which is so much better than the mousepad-glued-to-wood "pad" I had before, which has got me motivated to start working the pad more.
As an upcoming "gig", there's a jam night at the youth centre sometime this month (forgot the day), and I know 4 of the people who are bringing their instruments. I'm going to bring my acoustic guitar and some sticks, as they have a drumset there. I'll probably spend some time a couple days before tuning it up, as it seems to always be going out of tune. Should be real fun.

this may be a bit off topic, but i've recently been working on modifying my old pair of b8 hats a had laying around. i've made them into jingle hats. the bottom hat now has six jingles ripped off a tambourine and the top has two jingles on it as well as two additional drill holes.
i was quite pleased with the sound of them. much different than plain b8s. i need to buy another tambourine so i can modify my old zxt china in a similar fashion.
as far as practicing goes, i've been working on the practice pad in my dorm room a bit from time to time, but i need to get more serious.

Well I had drum lesson on sat, waiting for my 18" stage crash/bc2000 stand/bd batter head soon, hopefully not long!
Should be having band prac on sunday get practicing with our new stuff (other guitarist now at uni) and getting some gigs soon, cant wait to play again.
Practicin' more than usual, little by little with the slide technique with my left foot. Mainly left foot using left d bass and hihat for little messing around stuff.

I play my 5 piece Lake Cottage Bespoke Oak Custom, 1-up 2-down. With my 'custom' hihats (Pro sonix over B8 Pure Sex!) and K Custom Hybrid Ride and 12" Paiste 2oo2 Power Splash (my favourite cymbals listed) I'm possibly going to get my old b8 ride modified into a Phat 20" or so crash, or swap for some saludas.
Gig-wise, I have a 4 song set in my sisters charity concert on the 25th november (ask me about tickets ;)) I dont have anymore gigs lined up with my band, but theres a christmas concert with another band i play in (7 drummers, 8 keyboards an loads of windy stuff Highlight being a trumpet  ) For this concert I have a 12 Bar drum solo in 'Jonny B Goode' So, any ideas for that is cool!
I now have an income, so i can hopefuly get a new crash and then another new crash soon enough.
My dad has also said that If I buy the wood and hardware before we start, he wants to make another snare (size ideas? 12"x7" maybe?)
There isn't much else goin on in my life, I'm recording in the studio occasionally, with the band, and without, Hopefully I'm gonna record a version of 'Nights in white satin' with me playing everything, and singing, should be fun.
Thats all really, pete x

I've recently started university in Bournemouth, so I've had to leave my drums at home. As such I've been seriously ripping it up on the practice pad/bed. It's working well though, I went home this weekend and found I have improved with my speed, but more importantly I have been able to 'groove' more.
Just getting back behind the kit and jamming with my bassist, I found I can stick more complex phrases with less problems than I did. My independance has also improved.
There's not much else I can do for the moment, I can't join the Uni's Big band as they have a permanent drummer, and until next year there isn't much opportunity for forming a band. Annoying but it has made me appreciate my equipment so much more.

1)Concentrating on relaxation and clean execution while doing the flam beats in Stick Control and the one bar solo patterns in The Art of Bop Drumming.
2) Working on or learning any other drum related things that take my fancy i.e. sight reading, watching videos, applying rudiments around the kit, buying new books to work from etc
3) Saving up so I can go to Drum Tech in a year and half (hopefully)
4) I'm gonna turn my 13" inch tom into a floor tom cos its just too big to be bass mounted!
5) Practicing with my weird band every Saturday. We've had no gigs for the past 4-5 months due to cancellations (on behalf of the venues/organizers) then in the past week or so we've got ourselves 7 gigs lined up!

Well, I was recently asked to play with a country band at an American Legion on Saturday nights. Then the rock band I'm in is entering a local Battle of the Bands at a University around here. First prize is three weekends of studio time with a professional sound-recording engineer at Big Walnut Studios. Should all prove to be fun. I have a couple more concerts, but those are on saxophone.

Ok, well recently I've been put in charge of my own ensemble at school.
My professors trust my work habits and dedication to allow me to do what I want with a group of people.
So right now, it's a 3 percussionist and 1 bassist.
I'm on drumset and the other guys are split up on vibes and marimba.
So I've transcribed some songs..
"La Palco" by some guy I don't know.
"Sing a Song of Song" by Kenny Garrett
"From Your Letter" by Ayumi Hamasaki
They are awesome arrangements that I've made and hopefully I'll be able to record them and let you guys take a hear sometime.
As far as practice goals right now, I'm trying elevate my technique much farther that it's ever been. I've moved on from drum corps technique, to Moeller-esque. It's got more of that Jojo Mayer feel, though, because I'm doing that technique where after the whipping motion he rotates his hand to keep the motion.
Also, As for cymbal riding, I'm playing around with the technique in which you use the back fulcrum instead of the front. So far so good, we'll see what happens.
It always helps to be introspective about your own drumming.

The two students I had today both bailed on me . One came by for five minutes with $ and then took off, so i got paid to practice in my studio for 2 hrs.
I won an auction for a Bosphorus china, and am trying to wait patiently for it. Trying. This is (amazingly) the first china cymbal I have ever owned, so I'm going to be venturing into a whole new realm of trashiness.
I am currently waiting for my 17' HHXplosion crash to come in the mail. My band is working on a few new songs not yet completed though. More gear is to be added to my set at the end of the month. I promise. =) or shall i say >=)

I'm not too impressed with the guitarists in my new group at college. I had to teach them how to play a blues scale!

is that so? a couple months ago i picked up a sabian 21" hand hammered raw bell dry ride. is that what you're talking about? i think it's one of the best sounding ride cymbals i've ever heard. i ordered mine from massmusic.com and it was ridiculously cheap! i got the ride cymbal, which guitar center wanted $320 for, and a pro quality sabian cymbal bag for $300 total. now that's a deal!
for my diary entry, i had a disappointing evening last night. the regular blues jam i've been going to at a local bar was called off because some a-hole stole all the cymbals off the house drum kit, and also stole the PA mixer board, which was brand new. all this stuff was not owned by the bar, but by a generous fellow musician. unbelievable!
i also dropped by another nearby bar where my band is supposed to play on the 21st and found out that our gig is canceled because they decided to start doing karaoke on that night. sheesh! it's one setback after another!
on the bright side, i have my drum lesson tonight, which is always good. my drum teacher is doing a jazz concert next week as a fundraiser for a local high school music department. he'll be playing with the legendary sam rivers, a jazz sax player who has played with miles davis, herbie hancock, and tony williams among many others. i'm really looking forward to that.
if you like the HH raw bell dry ride you will love the AA version. I liked it more than the HH. it had more cut to it.

Anyway. Why is no-one posting in this any more? It's great to see what everyone is up to! As for me, the first opportunity to get in a band at uni has arisen, and we're jamming Plug in Baby by Muse. Nice and easy which is a relief! They're experienced playes, and older than me so hopefully we can get a bit creative with it all!
If, of course, they want me to stay.
I'm just waiting to start jammin again. I tried the whole starting from scratch thing last year this time and I didn't get very far. I'll stick to being a slouch that keeps it simple, don't have the time or energy for working out.

Band practice hasn't been so often in the past few weeks because we're in the process of writing new material. Our practices in the studio get wasted because we absolutely cannot write material together without a mess. However, we've jammed in the guitarist's living room on some new material, and its sounding good.
Bought a pair of 1A's today. Its my favorite kind of stick now, everything else feels like a twig.

Thought we could resurrect this thread..
Anyway this morning I was working on my feet alot because my pedal control sucks pretty bad. Coordination wise they are fine but i'm still a noob with this double bass thing. I've worked myself up to 16ths @ 136bpm. That might not be that fast but i'm practising for control and relaxation.
The other thing I was working on was soloing over the samba foot pattern, taking it pretty slow and playing melodies over the top from Macro Miniman's book.
Then for shits and giggles i'm getting on top of this independance thing between two hands. So i'm playing a fast swing with my right hand, feathering with the bass drum and playing 2 and 4 on the hi-hat. With my left hand i'm changing tempos in relation to the rest of my body. So the swing rhythm stays the same tempo but at the same time my left hand keeps getting slower or faster.

I was wondering if this thread had been left for dead or not.
I've finally got my new VFX 12" hats on the kit, surprisingly they work really well as main hats. I'm also working on triplets and triplet fills, Moeller technique in 5 stroke rolls and as usual, shuffles and the half time.

I'm doing a jazz quartet gig this sunday, should be cool. The guitarist is an amazing player, i'm looking to record the whole concert, so i'll post some audio up in the near future of that. We're doing mainly Be-Bop but also some latin jazz, some ballads and some blues.
All the guys i'm playing with are seasoned musos too, all in their 40's and i'm 15 :S But i rehearsed with them yesterday and they're all really cool. But yeah, i'm really looking forward to that.

Ahh that's definately gonna be a humbling experience GN!
Oh and this "independance" thing seems to be more of a mental thing. I'm managing to play that notorious Dennish Chambers thing he used to do back in the Serious Moves days, where he would play triplets (I think LRR?) with his feet and play "Take Five" over the top with his hands and changing the tempo of Take Five whilst keeping the triplets the same.
I'm doing the same thing except i'm focusing on playing my group of three (RLR) as 16ths notes and playing Take Five over the top with the accelerandos/decelerandos. This means that I can move between the multiple tempo thing and this other ostinato i'm toying with:
RH|------IMPROVISE AROUND KIT /w DIFF GROUPINGS------|
LH|x---x---x---x---|x---x---x---x---|x---x---x---x---|
BD|o-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo|-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-|oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-o|
HF|-x--x--x--x--x--|x--x--x--x--x--x|--x--x--x--x--x-|
Left hand is cross-sticking on the snare but it could do anything I suppose.
I'm also freeing up my limbs in jazz playing.
I first saw Roger Hempsall (monster player) doing this independance thing with the swing rhythm, and then I saw Antonio Sanchez do it on a video only he does it with multiple claves which is absolutely insane. He got into it because of Dennis, and so I checked out the early Dennis stuff and sure enough, there it was.

The bass drum and hi hat parts are basically a waltz but a little different, i should be able to play that if i can get the left hand to cooperate.
Also is that a polyrhythm of hmm, let me think, 4 over 3?
Ugh guess I'll go.
I havent played drums since fri. Mostly because I've been sick and Really I dont have the energy tbh. Turns out I have some uber bad synes crap.
I've basically dropped the Idea of getting a new kit. I dont even think I'll get new cymbals. My Parents (Mom) doesnt think I need them and is basically telling me "No, You cant get new cymbals with the money you make". So basically Im fckd. I've latey really been into Bright Eyes. I want to learn some of there stuff on drums. Easy stuff.

My band and I have one more show a couple of weeks from now in our hometown, then I've got take it easy on drums as my SAT and AP tests are coming up. During the summer, we plan to really kick it into gear, play out as much as possible and record some stuff.

I downloaded Queen live in Houston 1977 yesterday, so im gonna play to that today. I bought a pair of B8pro hihats with 4 rivets in the bottom hat. Its got a nice swish with a nice chick (surprise). Im going looking for a swish knocker or a big (22"+) china with a lot of wash to it, but not so much trash. Possibly a pang cymbal. Ebay will be my friend here.
Im also going band hunting today. My old band FFOLF broke up due to shitload of drama, so im performance less. I think im done with hardcore music for a while. I think im gonna do a prog rock band but with a lot of funk. Like a Red Hot Chili Rush band.

The bass drum and hi hat parts are basically a waltz but a little different, i should be able to play that if i can get the left hand to cooperate.
Also is that a polyrhythm of hmm, let me think, 4 over 3?
Yeah man that's exactly it. The feet are playing groups of three 16ths in an accent pattern that would regularly be four 16ths.
The next steps are to play lots of different patterns over the top with the right hand around the kit. Groups of 3, 5, 7, 9, latin rhythms ect..
Then I suppose the next step is make the left hand a bit harder, or just improv with both hands.
fishbulb
04-04-2007, 02:13 PM
Oh i can improve with both hands no problem, but keeping a structured somewhat syncopated beat is a little more challenging.
Took me a while to get paraddidles and paradiddle variations over waltzs but now they are a piece of cake.

Well I had a super awesome drum lesson yesterday...Working on some hi hat opening cloesing kinda thing while incorporateing the ride...Which I haven't done a lot of. My teacher also brought over a pair of old B8's for me since both of us hated my kit brand hats.So he gave those to me.Since they are better then what I had.
Today we had a guitar player that joined are band so we have a singer/guitar,guitar player/guitar player/and me on drums...It sucks becasue nobody plays bass in my town That are age level. So that's are set-up. We're having a practise hopefully this week...

So today I spent about 3 hours at the local shop looking at drums. I need to replace my current set-up (cymbals included) to buy a new car, and a $3000 is in my name in about 1 week. I'm not going to say what kind of set I have, as I'm ashamed to have it.
I've narrowed down drums to these 3 sets:
1) Gretsch Catalina Ash (8, 10, 12, 14, 14, 20)
-very warm sound, lots of resonance, and the green stain is incredible
2) Gretsch Catalina Rocker (13, 14,16, 18, 26)
-very powerful sound, bass is lacking though. Sparkling finish is a plus
3) Sonor Force 3005 (10, 12, 14, 14, 22)
- atypical Sonor sound, nice balance between Toms/Snare, Floortom is muddy in all tunings though. Deep Blue finish
All are $1100, +/- $200.
My cymbal choice will probably be as such:
Sabian 14" AA Hats, 16" AA Bright Crash, 16" HHX Studio Crash, 20" AA Medium Ride, Turkish 17" China, Maybe Sabian 12" AA Mini-Hats
Thoughts?

no club mod?
from those choices, i'd go Rocker, just cause i don't like 8", and i am a Gretsch whore.

I don't like the Rocker's sizes so I'd go for the ash.Or set them up and go with somebody try the kits out not knowing which is which then go from there.

defintely the rocker. Its got great sizes. Id like it a lot better if the 13" was a 12" because I dispise 13" toms.
Rocker tbh.
I love that kit.

Teaching was definately something I had to get used to. I dunno, I can teach people how to do things, but being professional about it was something I had to focus on. I'm not the business type.
Oh and my kit is going off to Hexham today. We're gonna rehearse our butts off with these new tunes for the album.

Go with the Gretsch for sure. In general, smaller drums sound bigger especially in a studio. The 20" bass drum is a big plus too.
Definately don't go with the rocker. 26" bass? Ewww. Really really not versatile.
I would take the Gretsch over the Sonor because of the 20" bass drum. 8" toms really aren't anything to get worked up about. As for the silly people that use 6" toms... My oh my oh my...

I'm finding that offset toms are really not natural. Check out Billy Wards DVD for an idea of how a kit should realistically be set up.
Oh and with regards to those Factory Metal Percussion Celtic Bells that I own, i'm realising that they are really quite jazzy? When I first got them I thought they were too quiet, probably because I was using them in more of a rock setting. They work really nicely in jazz.

I'd go with that one, but reverse the 2 rack toms, then bring them a bit more to the right. I'd probably change the cymbal positions, but that's totally personal preference I suppose.

Hmm, let's see. I set up my drum set in a Vinnie C. configuration. I'm saving up lots of money and selling my Export and PDP to get a Gretsh Catalina Jazz and either a Yammie Tour Custom or a Gretsch New Classics kit. I've got rehearsal for jazz every Wednesday with the Dragon Lady(aka the director). I've got a big show in May and some smaller shows afterwards. The group is travelling out of state at the beginning of the summer to play a couple shows and do some fun stuff. Have a couple concert tunes with the highschool band. And I'm currently forming my own jazz group and we should start playing some low profile gigs after a couple rehearsals. That about raps it up!

What i'm practicing drumkit-wise: the exercises at the end of Gary Chaffee's 'Sticking Exercises' book. Especially the latin ones, where you play different stickings over a samba foot pattern.

Not of me sorry. :(
Actually there would be video (with audio) of me on timbales if I could get hold of the times we were filmed. We were filmed a couple of times by the bandleaders partner. They're both like.. 60 years old, so.. slight age gap? :p
We were filmed another time with like a professional camera and shotgun mic by a tourism company, but I haven't heard anything about that yet. Would be nice if we were on TV.
