Next semester in history of modern design, our final project is anything designed by the student with a...you guessed it....modern design(anything in the last century pretty much). I am going to build a snare drum...which is super exciting for me since I've always wanted to. I don't know whether to dye and laquer(i like matte finishes) for a custom look or wrap it in the red sparkle wrap from drummaker.com so it matches my set. I am also debating the lug situation. i think offset lugs would be really cool, but i also like the double sided snare lugs. And I am not sure whether to use die cast hoops or get wood hoops for it. Who know's but when it's done...i'll be sure to post pictures.

Well If I go with dark red, which I am very seriously considering, I would use a deep ruby dye as to pull the grain out even more than lacquer would, then I would use a clear ultra satin lacquer for my clearcoat...lots of people clear coat over their lacquer when It's really not necessary as lacquer is a clearcoat, only not always clear. I also think that finish would knock the socks off my professor as he is professional woodworker(this guy can make a chair's chair, he's insane) and he would know the time and precision it took to get that finish. Then when I'm done I could turn around and sell the snare for next years tuition(kidding, it would go in my vault...if I had one)

Sounds awsome mann put some wood hoops on it and make it red to black fade with offset lugs!!!

I too decided I'm going to build a snare in woodwork class, a stave shell. Should be interesting.
