First off great choice...I own 3 black panther Snares, 2 of them are trad maple and one steel snare...looking to buy another soon not sure what yet though. No matter which BP you choose after you get it, every other snare you play is like "meh... it's alright but it is not as good as my BP LOL.

Why would you buy a musical instrument you can't hear....?

You don't live near any drum shop or guitarcenter at all?
i have the same problem, no one around here has decent gear, so i buy stuff offline, if i dont like it, i send it back, that simple, sure it makes choosing a bit more difficult, but in the end, its worth it

Well I know no drum shops near me carry BP, so he probably has a similar situation.

Aye, there's a guitar shop near the ice rink I play at that has some snares in it, i wanna stop in there and check it out. I understand the not being able to buy whilst being able to hear it. I did the smae thing with my Pork Pie snare and regret nothing about it.

The closest store that carries playable (in the store) drums is 70 miles away, and without a driver's liscense, it's INCREDIBLY hard to get down there. I get down there once every....4? months. I'm actually pretty lucky, compared to most places in this state.

I would suggest making a trip, bumming a ride from a friend or what have you. It's far better to invest a day in listening to some snares, then it is to blindly buy.
I dunno this "playable" drums. What kind of store wants tos eel instruments you can't try out? It's absurd.

I totally agree with you, it is absurd that I can't try it out. This store's focus, however, is not drums. Their drum secition is about the size of my bedroom. A cymbal rack takes up one wall, percussion takes up another, and and sticks/spare parts take up the 3rd wall. In the middle there are a couple stands to test cymbals, and that's it. There are a couple drumsets stacked for dispaly purposes, but that's it.
And bumming a ride is a lot harder than it sounds around here...you have to go through the heart of the biggest metropolitan area in the state. Not only is that a huge amount of time, but also a huge amount of gas. While I would gladly pay the gas prices and expenses, not everyone is willing to do it.

ive got a 12x5.5 birdseye black pather, it sounds as tight as a fishes arse, and really has a lot of volume and tuning capabilities.

Well that is a bummer... hmmm
My suggestion would be to try and find out various snares used on some of your more favorite recordings to help get an idea of what stuff sounds like.

i have two Black Panther snares. one is a 6.5 x 14 hand hammered brass and the other is a 6.5 x 14 deep forrest cherry. both have fantastic sound. very loud with great articulation. the brass has that great metal ring to it. the cherry has a very warm rich sound. both have a great crack when you want it.
the only problem ive had with either is when i recieved my cherry snare there was a small peice of plastic in the throw off that stopped it from working correctly. i bent the heck out of the screw that holdes the handle of the throw off on. thought it was just a bad screw so i replaced it then did the same thing again. i took the throw off apart and found the peice of plastic. no damage luckily and it has been perfect ever since. just one of those fluke things i guess.
i definatly recomend these snares. the price is great for such a good quality snare drum. and both of my snares have gold hardware that looks fantastic. so you cant go wrong with Mapex. i wouldnt be worried to order sight unseen with any of these.

Ask the stores online to tune the snares and send you a digital recording via email. If they can't do that, they're not credible for online sales.

well, since we're on the subject of snares, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in a 14x8 Pro M snare in blue ice.
sorry to hijack the thread but didn't want to start a new one.

Id buy a few things without trying them out, but a snare?
I'd drive across some state lines if I had to before I splooged that kinda dough out
But I think you'll enjoy any of those snares
