Hey guys. NEW RIDE!!!
Anywyas, I was at music live on friday and went over to the arbiter stand, cause they're nice guys and normally let me play a kit (i played the thomas lang practice kit with an intruder double pedal) So, I was there and something caught my eye, some splashes on one of the catalina club kits (the one with silver sparkle and black sparkle stripes) I walked over and looked closer and saw an 8" and a 10" AAX Splash...BUT...Wait for the good bit...They were different, lets just say that there wasn't nearly as much surface area as you would expect on the average 8 or 10" cymbal ;) I hit one and i was instantly in love, I was in awe of these things, they were amazing...They're not due until January NAMM, and will probably be about £80-£100 each. Two Words:
OZONE SPLASHES!!!

Thank the lord for photoshop!
I didnt count the holes, I also wasn't sure about the positioning, they were all equidistant from the centre of the cymbal though, and evenly spaced around the cymbal, the logos were each squashed between 2 holes, so they were TINY!

Yea, now they say that the Ozone layer repairs itself, do you reckon that the innovation department have fixed the Ozone cymbals with shrinking holes? an every time a tree gets cut down or someone does a burnout in their car they get bigger?

11-05-2006, 03:05 PM
I don't believe a single thing about all this "the ozone layer is melting" and "global warming is going to kill us all"
Do you know why? Because this planet has been here for like, either 60 million or 60 billion years (i wasn't paying attention in chemistry....), and through all of that we've had tropical periods, ice ages, and times where there were hardley any trees. The problems only arrisen since someone has spotted that it happens.
Because of that, i think that all this stuff about global warming is just part of the cycle of the earth and so forth. We might be making it worse, but i don't believe it'll kill us
sorry for the lecture

Haha if you don't believe ing lobal warming... you don't believe in reality.
Sattellite pictures of hte north pole from years before up to now show deffinte melting and shrinking.
Everest is shrinking at like 12 feet a year, the famous ice falls glacier at the base approach has recceeded 3 miles. 3 miles of ice melt at the top of the world.
Regaurldess how long hte earth has been around, there were not people spewing untold amounts of human made hazaerdous chemicals intot he air.
Something like 100 species of life go exstinct every day.
Th splash looks like it would be cool, maybe wouldn't be very durable though.
Aaron
11-05-2006, 09:25 PM
I don't believe in global warming. I believe we're seening an accelerated cycle into an ice-age due to human impact. To think we're doing all of this on our own and putting too much weight behind our capacity, imo. It's like of like running behind a tire going down a hill and hitting it alot.

"Planertary ReBirth" ?! hahaha
oh boy hahaha
Yes, that must be it.. the frogs would have started smoking and filling the air with poinsous chemicals. And the chimps! Oh the chimps would have made cars and processed oil into gasoline to burn and fill the air with nasty things never seen before..
And the Panda's! The panda's would have made industrial factilities that fill the water and air with horribly toxic things.
But best off all.. it would have been the ants. Yes, the ants. They would have banned together to create nuclear power, and nuclear waste.
Damm the ants! Damm them!
The humans, we just speeded up that process... right.

Because this planet has been here for like, either 60 million or 60 billion years (i wasn't paying attention in chemistry)
First of all, that wouldn't be chemistry, it would be astronomy. Second, it is believed the earth is roughly 4.5-5 billion years old, so neather of your numbers were accurate at all. Third, global warming is real, and a natural cycle that humans have made far, far worse and faster and will lead into an ice age.

Whats not to believe in global warming? Pollution creates holes in in the ozone layer, lets in to much heat, and icey things start melting.

Josiah
11-05-2006, 10:50 PM
A lot actually, I got into geography and geology when i was climbing, I wantted to know why the different rocks were the different rocks and so on. Took quite a few college courses in it, even did some digging!
See though, I have a unique advantage, that no schooling or study can give anyone.
I live here:
http://pdphoto.org/jons/pictures3/getty_5_bg_081003.jpg
It doesn't take much convincing about global warming, and the effects of pollution, when you see that on a daily basis.

Howard is a policy-mouthpiece; as soon as the liberal machinists think there's a strategic reason too change stance, he does so. He has no opinion of his own...
Josiah, I agree that there should be something done, but people right-off ice ages and climate shifts as part of the distant past and forget it happens on its own.

I dunno.. the disgustingly thick layer of toxic smoke that hangs above major cities might be a clue...
Somethign like living in central LA as a non smoker is the equivelent to living in Montana smoking 2 packs a day.
You gotta be off your rocker to not think that effects the atmosphere, and that's not even talking about nuclear waste, industrial waste, clear cutting of rain forests, and ocean polluting.
Aaron
11-05-2006, 11:59 PM
LA is an example of it at it's worst, and that's due to the indulgency of the population. Come to Australia and you'll see maybe 500 or so trucks that of the size you have throughout the entire country.

Hahaha not even close. There's a grip of range rovers over there and large offroad trucks.
I also know for a fact that Chevy Silverado's have sold closer to 50,000 units in AU. That's a bigger truck then mine. Mine is an s10, lifted, but still an s10.
That's not even looking at Fords, or any other car maker.

Hahaha what? That's crap.
I drove a small car, I like being able to fit my drums in without playing a game of rubics cube.
You are just jealous, there's plenty of reasons to own a truck.
Almost every gigging musician I know drives a truck or some form of SUV. I'd like to see you fit a few large guitar amps, pedal board and 3 guitars in cases in a Honda.
Or a 7 piece drumset, in cases, plus hardware.
Or the 10, 90lbs bags of cement and 300+ odd bricks to help my friend redo his patio.
Or to pick up my new door from home depot.. I'd like to see someone fit a door in a civic. Hahhaha

Go for a jog you fatty faith! ilu
Josiah: A young Billy Hyde began his long drumming career during the depression of the early 1930's. He would cart his drums in all weathers on the tram and train, to gigs. He'd play the show then get his drums and himself home the same way. All for the princely sum of 5 Shillings! (50 cents).
Josiah
11-06-2006, 12:23 AM
Well that's nice.
Not very applicable to today's world however.
There are no trains, trams or subways here. Nor would you be able, or allowed to take a drumset on a public bus. Thusly, making that example, completelly and utterly useless.
Considering it takes several trips back and forth from the truck for even a small setup... it becomes utter nonses talk.
Non the less, as I pointed out there are many other viable reasons to own a truck. Without a truck, it makes things like taking your dirtbikes to the desert a weee bit harder... 1 of 10,000 examples.
Aaron
11-06-2006, 12:28 AM
It guess it just comes down to sacrifice. I want to have less of an environment impact so I don't own a car and I bought an apartment rather than a whole house. Sorry if I seemed like I was having a go at you in particular, I just think that there are things we don't have to do, or could alter. Your truck was just an example I grabbed.
Josiah
11-06-2006, 12:33 AM
Wait.. aren't you the guy who takes the train like 2 hours each way to work?
That kind of defeats that purpose of not owning a car and having an apt. The train produces a ton of smog, you'd have far less of an impact getting your apt 15 mins from where you work and riding a bike.... if that's your reasoning.

2000 people on a train is much more ecologically sound than 2000 in individual cars. especially when they're 100% electrically ran.

The O-zone splash sounds like **** alone Imo, but I've used one in my usual instore jam and it sounds amazing in the right context, anyways the O-zone splash has been around in selected stores to see how well people react to them and see how well they sell and they're appearance at NAMM maybe be a good sign. They may be on the verge of joining the Sabian catalouge.
Josiah
11-06-2006, 07:17 PM
2000 people on a train is much more ecologically sound than 2000 in individual cars. especially when they're 100% electrically ran.
Never heard the theory of the jones have ya?
Theres a power plant somewhere, prob nuclear, cranking out that electricity.
And sorry, you having a place 15-20 mins away, and riding a bike to work is FAR more ecological.
BTW, 2,000 people on the train? That would be an absurdly large train, one of the biggest in the world. Even at 200 people per car, that's 10 cars. I've rode on trains for commute.. there's no 200 people cars. 2 story amtracks maybe boast 100 people a car. That'd still be 20 cars, at 100% capacity. The biggest airplane in the world, the Boeing 777 -300 only holds 550 people, in a 3 story, high density capacity. You are talking almost 4x that volume. The amount of energy needed to run any train, let alone one that can hold that many, that is incredible, just astounding.
And we aren't even getting into the sheer maintence, amounts of oil for the engines, track maintence, the cost of running the train, maintaining the train, the tracks, the fact the train probably causes, at multiple points, a great deal of traffic to stop and idle waiting for it to go by... at 20 cars, that's a decent wait.
A good bet is that train has mutliple stops too, wich takes incredible amount of energy to stop, and then regain motion again.
In the end, a train is not ecologically better then driving. ecause if you are driving 2 hours to work, or takign a train.. the point is still the same. that's 4 hours of travel.. for what? Nothing.
There's nothing ecologically sound about making 4 hour comutes to work.
Aaron
11-06-2006, 07:27 PM
C-Set have a seating capacity of 115 and are normally 10-cars long. So I over estimated..
I cannot afford to buy closer so I make the most of my circumstances, like most. It's much cheaper for a person to take a train, so there should be incetive enough:
For instance, a seven-day Rail Pass between Parramatta and Town Hall stations costs $37 while a 365-day FlexiPass is $1520. Our commuter calculator shows that, with petrol at $1.40 per litre, it costs $221 per week and $10,616 per year to use a small car to do the same trip.
Josiah
11-06-2006, 07:36 PM
That's talking about money spent, not energy used.
Think about this. You spend 8 hours at work, and 4 hours in comute. Have you calculated your hourly wage including that 4 hours... or not?
You make almost 30% less because of the comute alone... so where is the ecomonics in that?
We aren't even taking into account the price of hte comute, wich further costs you money.
If you make 20/hour at 8 hours a day. Great, now count that 4 hours extra. That drops you down to 13.30/hour. Now assuming you took the train 365 days.. wich you don't, it's really only about 300. That's about 4.1 a day at 365.
Lets devide that into things again.. now you are making just short of 13/hour.
But really if we worked it out, for just the days you work.. it's even worse, you make closer to 12/hour.. out of your orig 20/hour. Just because of your comute.
That's like.. 45% just in comute. I'm pretty sure the cost of living 15-20mins away is not 45% higher.

Well I utilise the time on the train for work which is another factor. The ability to use that time is worth it for me because, it means I don't have to stay late, or spend money on a connection at home. I do understand what you mean, but with time in leiu and leave loading I make it back [ie today I'm leaving at 1:00 pm], so it's worth it for me.
edit: porkupine, we're having a mature discussion. we both respect each other's views and so there is nothing wrong with this. if you don't like it, read something else.
Josiah
11-06-2006, 08:07 PM
Exactly, I respect aaron very much for what he does. And his views. And I respect him more, even more then myself, for trying to do his part.
Aaron is not a teenager, he's an adult, like me. And as adults, we are all put in very... odd.. situations and sometimes, different view points can help use see things differently.
Lord knows, as aaron pointed out, yes.. I drive a lifted truck. It has the same hauling capacity being lifted, or not. Though I do like being a lil safer, a lil higher up and such. Even at the cost of more expense, and for me, it's viable and meetable. For others, well for many others, no it's a waste, that puts them in debt.
And I'm sure aaron here, doesn't plan on spending the next 20 years doing what he's doing. Simply, I'm trying to provide a different view point.. that in my expericence ( i live in a very long comute place) is not thought about.
I think ideally we should all have electric cars, and there's really no reason my truck can't have a regenertive eletric engine in it, with the same, or more amount of power. But that's a different issue, and it's defined by things far beyond our control.
Myself, I've been on those long comutes. I don't wish it on many others, so I believe it's a good idea to try and find alterantive resolutions. Or at least present them, and the reasons why, even if I can't do it in the most diplomatic manor.
Aaron
