Songs I can play confidentially....actually, I don't really know that many. For that manner, me playing a song = grooving on top of it, without a care to the original drum parts. Though I can kinda 'match' up to these:
Fire - Jimi Hendrix
Who are You - The Who
Oh Darling - The Beatles
Flight of the Rat - Deep Purple
Back in Black - AC/DC ;)
Age: 13.
Years Playing: 3.
Songs I Can Play:
Underoath - The Impact Of Reason
Dr. Acula - Shocker On Shock Street
RHCP - Dani California
RHCP - Uunder the Bridge
Opeth - In My Time Of Need

The double bass in MoP can be done pretty easily with a single pedal.

Hmm ok i'm 23, been playing for 19 years.
I don't learn songs in the fashion you are refering too, while I think it's a great learning tool. It's something I simply don't do any more. I perhaps have learned and played live a few hundred different songs, and have been asked numerous times to learn a bands cd to play for them live, or record material.

Yeah no sht I can't play it like Chad Smith, there's no way I'll be able to play it and sound like Chad Smith. But what I can play is Chad Smith's grooves on paper.
Sorry then, I can't play any songs with confidence, since I don't have the exact feel of the drummer.
I know groove and feel. I groove as much as I can and try to make it sound like him, but yeah obviously it's not going to sound like him. Can you play it confidently then?

In that case, scrap most of my list. I mean i can play them, but i'll be too busy thinking about what im playing to make them sound good.
It's no offense to the people who really try and learn by playing along to some of their favorite drummers. The thread starter should have left the word "confidently" out of it considering they haven't been playing for very long and claim to be able to play some very complex songs.

I'm 31, (old)
I've been playing since I was 11 or 12, but I didn't play much during college (no time, no space, no inclination) so it's a little hard to say how long i've been playing. Instead of drumming though, I studied classical guitar and music theory while in school, so it wasn't like I gave up music. Fortunately, though I saw the light.
I'm kind of in the same boat as a few others on here, in that I never learn songs note for note, unless it's something I want to study from a transcription. I mostly like jazz anyway, these days.
I used to learn a lot of songs in drum lessons from transcriptions though, like: Steely Dan: Kid Charlemagne, Black Cow, I've got the News,....old old rock stuff: the ocean, dyer makr, stairway to heaven, sweet child of mine, Rock of Ages, Miracle Man, One, Eye of the beholder, Purple Haze, Consider me Gone(sting), Roxanne, Don't stand so close to me, Owner of a lonely heart(yes), Harder they come (jimmy cliff) , Epic (faith no more)....and a lot of other crap I can't remember.

But really, all of the stuff i play is improvised grooves and playing along with my cd collection, not just perfecting particular songs, the ones listed above are just some i'm able to, but i rather prefer playing my own grooves from other ideas i've pulled from other drummer's syles and groove, then used them to develop my own sort of style if you know what i mean?.

If I meant "oh I can play this" I could have added Weezer, the White Stripes, AC/DC in there.
RHCP is the band that I play along to allll the time. I know most of the drum parts (from the Chad Smith era), and even the fills from listening to them so much.

wahahaha it's stuff like that, that just shows people really don't know what "playing a song" is.
I think what he's getting at is that.
If the drum part was put out on a peice of paper. He would play it, note for note without messing up.
No one can duplicate another person's drumming...
Why don't you get on somebodys case for playing Bonham. Or Mitchell. You can't tell me that those drummers were famous just for the notes they played...
*I'm probably really late in this argument*.

I'd say that Damo wins this thread and that most others are a tad overconfident.
Nah, I can play Fire, my band does it live, the bass and guitar and vocals are way easy and they can never get them down
My playing style matches Mitchell more than anybody's, actual. It's not hard for me to 'emulate' him cause I sound like him!

I could give anything a try. I don't play with tracks frequently, I did Muse stuff ages ago, but anyone here should be able to do what Dom does.
It's good to see the diversity being shown by some young drummers.

I was bored one week and and was in a very Zepplin like mood and that's all I worked on. no offense taken. It is hard to believe. It isn't note for note the same, and I take out the timpani part seeing as I don't have one, but is really similar. Believe it or not.

The Heats on - Count Basie
Coconut Champane - Maynard Fergueson
Rock And Roll - Zeppelin
Santaria - Sublime
The Police - Message in a Bottle
But the point isn't that I can play those. I can play almost any song in the style so this thread is kind of pointless since we don't have a melodic instrument where you need to learn a song note for note or its going to sound sour. If get 2 guitarists and 2 drummers to go for the same gig, the guitarists will play the same thing exept for the sounds of the guitar, the drums will be 100% different.

Songs I can play confidentially....actually, I don't really know that many. For that manner, me playing a song = grooving on top of it, without a care to the original drum parts. Though I can kinda 'match' up to these:

3 1/2 years
Fire - Jimi Hendrix
Who are You - The Who
Oh Darling - The Beatles
Flight of the Rat - Deep Purple
Back in Black - AC/DC ;)

After 6 years I still have tendancy to hit some kick notes a few milliseconds off. And my time still is far from perfect.
We all thought we must have sounded amazing once we started learning how to play songs for the first time. If I had a digital video camera or something I would record some songs and upload them for you guys, but I'm broke and I can't really afford a video camera right now.
I believe that you can play the songs and it's good that you challenge yourself. I don't mean any offense but i find it hard to believe you can make them sound anything like the original.
