Well I just got the game and spent the past hour playing it (I just meant to play for a couple minutes before going to sleep!) This game is AWESOME. IGN's review wasn't very impressive, but since it doesn't cost me anything I figured I'd give it a try. Wow! The single greatest addition to the NFS series.. canyon racing! Either IGN said the canyon duels were neither great nor bad, but what the hell do they know. They also said there were only four, but there's more in the challenge series. It's ****in amazing. I guess part of it is because I like tearing through the twisties on my bike, but I'm pretty sure anyone will get an adrenaline rush out of this. It's just you vs one other guy (a boss if you're playing in career mode) racing down a canyon. For the first half you follow, trying to stay as close as possible to his rear bumper without hitting him, then for the second half he follows you. If one guy manages to pass the other and keep the lead for x seconds (I forget) they automatically win. There is no turbo and no speed breaker. Some of the turns have nothing preventing you from flying off the edge of the canyon. It's so intense, I was just trying to beat the easy canyon duel in the challenge series and I still haven't beaten it, it's freakin hard and very long. After playing the 360 demo I thought it was kinda cool, but way too easy. Well, they changed that! The courses are much tighter with lots of hairpin turns.
Besides canyon duels, there is also canyon racing which is 4 racers with turbo, speedbreaker etc. It's ok, but much faster paced and not as difficult. Then drift, checkpoint, speed camera, sprint etc etc. The cops are back, although I've only been in one low level chase so far so it was hard to tell how good they are but I'm sure it's at least the same as MW so it should be fun. Right now I just have a crappy RX8 so I haven't bought anything to test out the autosculpting, but it looks like there are a lot of options.

NFS Carbon? Is this the one after NFS most wanted?

Yea.
oh, and another cool feature is you can bind specific gears to any button. R-6th. It's cool because now right when you're entering a really tight corner I can just hit one button and go into first instead of downshifting from 6th or whatever gear. It takes a little getting used to though because I'm so used to just rapidly downshifting through all the gears, but it seems like it could be very useful so you don't have to do everything with one hand.

Hmm, sounds cool. But then again, i might not want to get this...
I have NFS Most Wanted...The game is pretty alright. It was addictive for like the first few days, and it slowly wore off and got boring, doing the same thing over and over again.

Exactly I had the same problem with the game.
Its really cool when you start off, but soon its just more of the same things thrown at you.

It's out already
I'll have to go get it soon. I'm still playing the challenge mode on MW though heh, on challenge 65 I think.

How can cop chases be boring? In FPS all you do is shoot people (basically), RTS all you do is build base --> build units ---> throw them at enemy units/base. Granted in MW the racing part definitely was a low point in the game and pretty boring, but the cop chases and challenges (for the most part) were pretty sweet. And it's not like this game has less variety in races then other racing games, unless you just don't like racing games.
But if you do like racing I think you should at least dl it to play the canyon duels. You may not like the game, but it's the only racing game I can think of that has anything like it.
I forgot to say that in addition to the challenge series which is maybe 30 challenges (3 for each category), there is also a reward card thing or something that has you do stuff in career to unlock misc stuff, from vinyls to cars. Each card has 4 parts that you need to complete to get the reward. Stuff like win x races, own x cars, sell x cars, evade police after x minutes in free roam, own all muscle/tuner/exotic cars in your garage etc etc
Wow, sounds really awsome Zak. Thanks for the review. And yeah MS got really boring, except for the police chases, they never get boring :).
Gonna get this and rip it up after exams!
wow looks awesome. I loved most wanted so I will def. dl this. car list looks great.
I didn't find most wanted at all. It sort of is the same thing over but every game is like that. It's the same tracks but by the end the conditions are far different. the whole game you are trying to beat bosses and get better cars. right from the start i wanted the murcielago and worked to get that. but its good when you get the car of the boss you just beat. the story isn't as deep as some other games but it's a racing game and the blacklist is enough and the twist was kinda predictable but cool. I had only played hot pursuit before this and I liked that even but theres far more in this. you can't say its boring for a racing game or at all.
the races themselves are great especially if they aren't too easy and you actually have to try a couple times. and all the different modes are cool. getting away from the police can be really cool with pursuit breakers and killing them. trying to get the objectives with them is fun. it's like you could get to safety now but you can risk it and find a cop to continue the pursuit and get more cops on you and spend longer. sometimes it's really close and you almost get caught then when you get away without getting busted it's a relief.
meh i liked it and i'm sure i'll like carbon.
I never bothered much with the tuning and crap like that. I kept it stock on all but one car and just used performance upgrades. they look better stock anyway.

Hey Zakath, how would you rate Carbon to Underground 2?
I really enjoyed Underground and never got a chance to play Most Wanted. I'm wondering if I should just skip MW and just go right into carbon? Also, is there day and night cycles or is it all at night like in Underground? And also, is it free roam like U2?

Hey Zakath, how would you rate Carbon to Underground 2?
Never played it. It is dusk/nighttime racing only. Of course there is free roam.
The one thing that really sucks is teammates. REALLY ****ing annoying/useless. But you aren't really forced to build a crew so it's not a big deal..... just don't expect much from that new gimmick.

Hah, well I still haven't beaten even the easy canyon duel challenge. It took me like 20 tries to just make it to the second part, but then he blew by me in the first couple turns and I lost. :( argh. Part of it is cuz it's freakin hard to get around these tight corners while using manual transmission, takes a while to know the corners enough to get the entry right.

Well, I haven't played Carbon yet, but have played (and owned) Most Wanted and played Underground 2 plenty of times.
If anything, you should just skip to Carbon. From my observations, it seems as though it combines elements from both games, plus more.

"Race Wars" is a type of race only included in 360 and PC versions.. just something to keep in mind. It's a race with like 20 racers. The only races I care about are ones that involves canyons. It's so crazy especially on the highspeed canyons where the race lead is being exchanged back and forth around nearly every corner.
and also a new addition: american muscle. really terrible handling but it's strangely fun once you get the hang of it and stop oversteering directly into walls..... or off canyons

Ahh I really wish they would put a Firebird/Trans Am in one of these racing games. I've always liked them better than the Camaros even though they are pretty much the same cars. To be honest, I cant really name any games that have included a Firebird/Trans Am.
I hate how Gran Turismo 4 has like 700 cars or whatever, and like 10 different camaros but not one T/A. What gives.
Wooot, American muscle for the win. Gettin this in like 5 days. Can't wait.

The cops in Carbon are definitely more aggressive and persistent. Also, even though some of the chatter/music is recycled from MW, they do have new stuff unlike what some reviews imply. In MW you could basically cruise around in chase levels 1-4 with cops around you and they wouldn't really try to take you out a lot they'd just kinda do a rolling roadblock without ever slowing down, but even at level 3 in Carbon they are constantly pullin the PIT maneuver or attempting to slow you down. Also when they call for reinforcements, even though there are less cops around there are still more then the 1-2 that were left in MW. I was doin a challenge in a muscle car and it took me 10 minutes to get away, and I was trying my best not to let the chase drag on.

poor baby
one more cool new feature I just ran into.. when you're in other gang's territory, sometimes a gang member will follow you and if you stop they'll challenge you to a race from your current position to anywhere that you choose (the map comes up). You don't have to accept, but it's pretty fun, especially since there aren't giant arrows blocking off every path except for one.

Yea, it's ridiculous. Supposedly that's how it was in Underground 2, but I'm just glad there's barely any drift races. Even the non-canyon races are better then MW. In MW the racing got really boring but these races are a lot tighter and some parts are pretty technical.... for an arcade racer that is.

Pff, I don't need any fancy cars. My Nissan 240SX OWNS hardcore. Earning it was a ****ing bitch though. I almost felt bad for Angie (Kempton boss who drives a muscle) when we took it to the canyon. Do you have the PC version? If so, try getting the 240SX and using that. I could beat almost all tier 3 races with it, except for the speed camera races (too slow on the top end) and a couple other ones.

I agree to some extent, which is why I never bothered with the Underground series or other games like Midnight Club DUB edition or whatever. However I like NFS Most Wanted and Carbon. The customization is there, but it's not the main point of the game and you don't have to do it at all (I usually just max out the performance aspect and just paint all my cars black). The real fun in Most Wanted was running from the cops. It's like FEAR's enemy AI.... but with cars. Carbon has cop chases, but I also actually like the racing this time around especially the canyon races which are the closest I can get to tearing through twisties right now. Or perhaps maybe you're the law-abiding type who doesn't find enjoyment in running from cops.

I'm just saying, comparing Moto GP to this type of game is like the opposite ends of the same spectrum. I guess it shows your open-mindedness, since you can enjoy both titles, where as I seem to stick to the other end only.
Sure, i enjoy running around in GTA or saints row, but thats inherently different

Hahah, that may be the first time anyone on here ever called me somewhat openminded.. but I think MotoGP is more like NFS then you think, it's not a very realistic bike simulator it's more arcadey (yes even in GP mode) but two wheels means it's inherently more fun then a four wheel vehicle game. What they need to do is have cops in the next MotoGP.
