this is just a quick question, and although i hate to make a thread for such a blunt-answer question, i can't find a thread that relates to this too much. anyway, i've been searching for a 5K ohm and 5.1k ohm resistor, but i can't find any anywhere, not radioshack, not even the almighty internets. so, my question is: do they even exist? and if so, where can i get some? also, if a circuit usually uses brick style resistors, will using the more normal O=O shaped ones work the same?

5.1k ohm is green brown red(i think)
5k ohm is green black red(i think)

you should be able to find them somewhere, i cant help in telling you where to find them thoo

As far as the 2nd part of the question, if what you mean by brick resistor is surface mount resistor, then you should really keep things the same. Anyway, regardless of what type you have in there, you should keep it the same.

Resistors have wattage ratings also. If you put a 1/4 watt resistor where a 1 watt resistor should go, then there probably will be smoke.

a 5k ohm resistor isn't a standard resistor, 5.1k ohm resistors are standard though. If it has to be 5k for some strange reason your best bet is two 2.4k ohm and a 200 ohm resistor in series.

don't resisters have a range of tolerance? if i'm correct you can use values that are slightly off and still get the same results.

Your regular basic electronics resistor would have a tolerance of 5%

Which would mean the 5.1k resistor could be 255 ohms higher or lower, I'm not sure exactly why you need a 5k and a 5.1k if this involves guitars/amps/pedals the difference should be neglible.

Or a 3.9k and a 1.1k would be standard values...
