Question for fingerstyle bass players

The other day, my friend jokingly said "hey look this is your jack off muscle" and pointed to the muscle between your thumb and index finger. There's a little muscle that runs through there I guess. But when I flexed my right hand and looked at it, I realized that muscle is huuuge on me. It's like a muscle ball.
Is that something that all fingerstyle bassists get? Has anyone ever noticed it on you?

No, there is a muscle there.

Make a fist and look beside the lowest knuckle on your thumb, while still making a fist, wiggle your thumb around and you'll see it move. Poke it with your finger, it feels funny. Mine are pretty big on both hands.

I'm pretty sure all fingerstyle bassists get it, but I don't think its from fingerstyle bass specifically because it is on my fretting hand as well. My guess is that all anyone who clenches their hands a lot would have them quite pronounced.

I have actually noticed that after sustained playing, the muscle(?) between my thumb and pointer fingers gets a lot bigger. I think that's what you're talking about TS. I get it on my fretting hand too. But most muscles expand when you excersise them. I think...

Great, now people are going to start claiming they're better at fingerstyle than others, cuz they're muscle is bigger...

Gaslight's right, you can get it from anything that involves using your thumb..if you know someone who plays video games a ton, there muscle there is probably bigger than yours.

its not just fingerstyle players that get that, i have a guitarist freind who has a huge muscle there too, i think its just anything were you use your thumb and finger.

It's when you clench your fist and stuff. Someone brung it up at my school a few days back. Some kid who's done martial arts half his life had a huge one, my guitarist had a similar one from 5 years of playing, and I had one a bit smaller from 2 and a bit years of bass.

But to be fair, all musicians are wankers.

wen i broke my wrist and had my hand/wrist in a caste for 8 weeks you could see the diffrence between my hands wen i got out of the caste. the muscle was pretty much flat on my broken wrist hand and huge on the other, it was realy wered.

i do that, and when i bend my wrist back and forwards while flexing the little muscle lump bobs in and out.. it's amusing and somewhat disturbing how much it can pop out haha
