I'm looking for a semi-decent bass to get, most likely second hand. I want one that will be good for recording through a DI (I'm finally setting up a basic recording setup at home). I'm also interested in learning bass - working through some of the easier Dream Theater songs (do I need a 6 string?).
Anyway, name me some brands, some pickups that would be good to look for, or just give your opinion - not too OT though, please :P :chug:

I am going to advise against a six string, only because you'll get a really crappy one in that budget.
As for what to get, you might be able to get a used MIM Fender for that, I am not sure.

what sort of price range (and what sort of brands/models) do bass start to become good, or the next level up from basses in the budget I mentioned above. (US$380)

500 USD will get you a fairly decent bass if you buy smart.

You might be abe to get a used fender mexican jazz.
Don't go near squires, staggs, unbranded basses and really cheap basses.

The Fender sounds like a good option.

I'll agree with avoiding anything below that price range GENERALLY, but the Vintage Modified Squier basses are an excellent value.
The Jazz bass in particular.
