Ok, i'm starting out on bass... and only have about $350 AUD to spend. I've played a squier j-bass before, and didnt mind it. though the knobs were a little ****ty. and it looked pretty good too. ANYWAY.... what else is there thats better than that, and i should know about.

well 350 Australian dollars = 265.02 U.S. dollars (yay google) so I'd say the ibanez gsr200. One of (if not the) best starter bass out there.

It doesn't matter what the currency exchange rate is because they live in Australia, so the prices are going to vary greatly. If he were travelling to America in order to buy gear, then, yes, that would come in account.

I am judging that the GSR200 is around 450-500AUD seeing as I saw a Squire for 429AUD. I don't actually live in Australia, so I can't tell you much, but I would save up a bit more money in order to purchase a nice entry level bass that would last you a while.

Yeah go for a GSR200 even if it involves a little more saving, I'm not just recommending it from hearsay, I played mine for 4 years before I ended up buying a new bass.

Yeah Ibanez basses are really good for the price. The SR305DX was an excellent intermediate bass for only $350.
