I play a out a Ampeg BA210SP with the digital effects that include 16 total.
Chorus Reverse Wah
Flange Chorus/Echo/Wah
Phase Shifter OctaWah
Reverb SVT
Octavider Synth Bass 1
Echo Synth Bass 2
Slapback Square Wave
Funk Wah Bypass
Alot of people say these effects arent that great as a pedel and they arent, but are good for practicing, I tried just about everyone of them playing the intro of whom the bell tolls and none match. SVT, probally the clossest to it.
But can someone tell me what pedal/disorortion Cliff Burton used, on Whom the Bell Tolls, I heard from some people Big Muff, but I am not sure. If you have any other pedals that are similar also, I am also looking for an all around disorortion pedal. Some names would help, even know I hardely use effects. I am soon gonna see what guitar center has and see what the differences are of a pedal then whats programed in my amp.

If you could give me a price and maybe a picture, I would defiantaly take it in consideration. Also, what is the condition, and how much use have you put on them?
Would you mind naming a few songs he used his big muff and wah on except for whom the bell tolls? Or is that like the only one, because I know when he soloed live he used them.

He used it on the solo's in Orion. I believe he used it for the distortion on Ride the Lightning, Four Horsemen(sounds a little distorted) and a few others off of Kill 'Em All, and Call of the Ktulu.

why people insist cliff uses distortion on orion will never cease to amaze me, but I don't want to agrue about it :) eh, gutshot, my big muff is just as good as the day I bought it performance wise, but it looks a little worse for wear cos of the way EHX pedals are "painted", but it works fine. the morley wah i have is the Mark tremonti power wah, it's got a huge sweep on it, like the one cliff used, but it's also got a volume boost you can use for solos. I think it works pretty well for burton's stuff. the wah is in perfect nick too, only missing the rubber feet on the bottom.
Just remember that I DO live in australia, so postage is gonna be a killer. I'll part with the muff for $60 AUD, and the wah for $160, plus you pay for postage to whereever

at 6:36 into orion, cliff does his famous solo. he stated it in some magazine interview . . . but anyways, cliff used a big muff with a morley wah/volume/distortion, some three in one pedal . . . the morley can be heard on the intro of "damage inc." too . . .

He's also got a lead part towards the start of the song + I think the intro is all him.

During the first part of orion, when it speeds up and you only hear what sounds like a guitar that is Cliff.

to answer the origional question...
use a regular big muff (the big black one with yellow writeing)...
umm... for 'for whom' i don't think you'll need the morely...
but yeah
you set the tone too more than halfway up, but not 3/4 of the way.
then the sustain, put it about halfway, that should be the right sound, just about. i've never gotten as smooth a tone as he got... but thats close enough..
(oh, if you ever do get your hands on one, you'll get what i'm saying if you don't right now)
you're welcome

whoo!!! someone else who knows that the intro to damage inc. is NOT a guitar!!!
yeah he used the good morely and he experimented with i think a reverb and volume pedal... cool stuff, just over-dubbed harmonies like 30 times, sooooo amazing. and everyone thought it was a guitar
yeah this is taken from:http://www.metallicaworld.co.uk/Interviews/1986_cliff.htm
Q: On the new album I heard some short bass solo type thing where you're using volume pedals. What's that about?
CLIFF: On this album it's the intro to a song called "Damage," done all on bass. It's about eight or 12 tracks of bass, a lot of harmonies and volume swells and effects and stuff. I would hesitate to call it a bass solo, it's more just an intro, but it is all bass. There's also a little bass solo in "Orion," it's right next to a little guitar solo. No one will probably be able to tell that it's bass, but it is.

dunno what shipping would be, via UPS global express it'd be around $50-70USD. the current exchange rate (as of this morning) is .76AUD buys 1USD. guess I'll have to go ebay then... oh, and to the people who were on about cliff.... I know damage inc is bass, and I guess I'm going to have to reconsider my views on orion. not that it worries me, I can't stand metallica these days :thumb:

smart one,
cliff was cremated and spread in front "Maxwell Ranch" in Castro Valley, one of his favorite childhood hang-outs (not sure what state, somewhere in California) ((info found on http://www.nunnie.com/cliff-burton.html )
:thumb:
his pedals and basses stuff might have auctioned, stolen, or hidden in the 'Tallica HQ

yeah, i don't think you could even tab it, considering it's like 15 notes or something per chord, i dought it can be duplicated, but hell, if ya wanna do it, good luck, it'd be bitchin' if ya could
Jason got some of his gear, as did Cliffs family and I think the rest is at Metallica HQ.
Some of his basses got auctioned a few years ago, but they where just ones he'd played once or twice, nothing special..
He's also got a distorted solo in Metal Militia, I think?
