Hi, I'm getting a new bass soon and i've got a few basses in mind and a few questions..

1. Stingray bass - i'm wondering how it sounds when played high on the neck with a pick.

2. Rickenbakers - in general, how do they sound when slapping?

Any help would be great.

with the stingray you get a more bassy tone, boomy and such when you pick high on the neck. what type of tone are you looking for?
i would recomend the 'ray, unless you are totaly into classic rock and stuff. even then, you can get so many tones out of them...

Stingrays are pretty wonderful *looks at the one in the corner of the room*

Real easy to play and sound great.

I like the sound of Rics slapped although room is limited with the pick-up cover on.

^^
You can remove the pick-up cover anyway so...

But out of either a Ray or a Ric, I'd go with a Wick. :p

When I tried out a ric it felt like utter crap to slap, and popping was really hard. For me it kinda felt more like a picking or fingering bass.

My Ray however, feels and sounds like pure sex no matter what I do with it. Sounds great all the way up the neck. If you want a great slap bass, go with the Ray.

+1 with the Stringray, such nice basses for slapping

God, I played one that this guy at the local music dealer owns, it was beautiful. Vintage/aged white finish with matching headstock and tort pickguard, the action was so low and smooth, it was...:amaze:

I've always wanted a 'Ray and I played one the other day and to be honest it was nice, but for the money I would rather get a warwick or a sadowsky. Personal opinion.

Those basses feel pretty different to me so I would suggest that you go to a store and try both before buying. However my preference lies with 'ray.

Also, the Ric's neck felt kinda thick and chunky and not really comfortable to me, whereas the Stingray, i picked it up and it was perfect.

In this thead: Stingrays for the win.

...but I'm thinking i want a Sadowsky now...

I used to own a ray. It felt great, had a satin finish neck that was very fast. The soapbar pickup had a wide freq range and sounded good scooped or mid range overdriven. It was the best bass that I had played until I played, and bought a Zon Sonuns 5, that was back in 1998 and I've never looked back. If I were you I'd add Zon and Pedulla to your list as well as warwick. try them all out before you buy

rics are rics, and you are gonna get the ric tone no matter what you do, Rays on the other hand, are incredibly versatile. i generally dislike both bass but, from my experience this is what i have come to learn
