ok, after my combo amp (2X10, 180w) started buzzing at me the other week (still in for repair, grrrr) iv decided to totally upgrade my amp and bass, this might seem like a bit of a ramble, but just go with it and suggest whatever you can at the end

been playing nearly 5 years and i think its time i upgraded, money isnt a problem so feel free to suggest anything, im not going to go over the top, but i think ill be willing to go up to about £2000 for bass and amp, maybe more if its the right stuff,

i was thinking about sorting out my amp first, and was going to go with the Ashdown ABM 500 EVO II Amp Head or the lesser 325 watt version (i really like the sound of ashdowns) and a 4x10 cab then maybe add a 1x15 underneath for bigger venues, http://www.ashdownmusic.com/bass/section.asp?section=abm this is their site, with specs and stuff

this is where i need help really, i dont understand the whole wattage thing when it comes to combining heads and cabs, and whats good and bad? if i use the ashdown head, would it be best to use the ashdown cabs, or would i be alright getting cheaper ones? ill probably get the 4x10 as an ashdown anyway, i doubt ill get my other cab for a while

anyway, im thinking along the lines of a musicman for my bass simply cos i generally like the sound of them when i see bands using them, any other suggestions of companies i might like? im seriously quite clueless about companies and stuff

I have the ABM300 and it is awesome.
BTW the site is a little out of date - the output power is not 325W or 307W it is 300W :thumb:

oh erm, i swear i put that down, its just an encore starter bass, without looking it up i think it was called and encore 440 or somthing, and yes im in a gigging band, been gigging with them for about 3 months, were about to play our 6th show this saturday kinda rock/metal/post hardcore kind of band, and this equpiment will be hopfully used mainly for gigging and band practice, i dont practice alone much anymore (bad, i know) ill probably just use my old equipment for practicing at home anyway

I have that head as well, do you know if it's 300w at 8 or 4 ohms 'cause it says "Minimum Load 4 ohms" which doesn't really help.

Shoot, for £2000, you could buy a rather nice set up. Honestly, I would just go to all the different shops and try out anything and everything.

i would highly encourage you to keep looking into musicman basses. and for an amp, i've never played any ashdowns, but i might suggest you look into avatar for lower priced cabinets. gallien-krueger makes great amps, you might look into those.

I'm surprised you guys are saying Pedulla for that kind of music. I think of Pedulla as more of a Jazz instrument, but not really a lot of meat to the sound. But maybe that's just the way mine's set up.

I really like the sound of a J pickup when it's placed really close to the bridge, but there aren't many basses made that way.

Chris from Muse played a Pedulla and i know they arent uber metal or anything but still

my 2 cents

Go with the 500 Evo just so you have so head room just in case you don't ever want to be in a situation where your amp isn't loud enough. As for the cab, i really ashdown head's with ashdown cabs. That would equal about $1600USD. Which would be about £850.

As far as basses go you really can't go wrong with a musicman. Also brands to keep in mind should be Warwick and Fender. Both of those shold go with what style of music you play.

cheers guys, unfortunatly due to extortionate prices/taxes over here, the amp and cab is gonna cost about £1300, but never mind, ill go for it anyway, now just gotta get to a music shop and try out some basses, thanks for the advice,

will the amp (500w) be good for powering both the 4x10 (600w) and 1x15 (300w)? im still a bit clueless about combining amps with cabs, just for future reference

and one last thing, there is a cab with 4 ohms impedance and one with 8, they're exactly the same price where ever iv seen them online and they look pretty much the same apart from the resistance (thats what impedance is right?) so what exactly would that effect?

Pedulla can be anything-you-like instruments.

Also, we don't get avatar this side of the pond, but you don't have a location so I can't help you there.

You want two 8 ohm cabs to go with the head.

oh ok that simple? i take it i would be fine running 1 8 ohm cab for now then?

Yeah, that will be just fine, if its a 4 ohm minimum then you could have any of the following combinations

1x8ohm = 8ohm
2x8ohm = 4ohm
1x4ohm = 4ohm
4x16ohm = 4 ohm

ooooohhh i see, fantastic,

well you'll be glad to know iv gone with the ABM 500 EVO II Head and the ABM 410T Cabinet, ordered just now for £1066 (found a slightly cheaper supplier), now all i have to do is play some different basses, thanks alot for all your help, you can let this thread die now if you like
