Simple question. I'm sooo not paying for lessons. I don't even have a drum kit. However, I would like to learn to play a little just to broaden my horizons and all that. I played for a simple worship band for a while but my technique is horrible. I can groove and all, but I don't know how to do everything properly.
So can someone please post me some proper pics or videos or something describing exactly how to hold the sticks? In traditional grip, specifically, cause I'm old-school like that. :)
Shot a lot. :chug:

I say you buy a kit. Lessons are also good but not essential. I dont have lessons anymore because my teacher sucked, he was teaching me stuff I didnt wanna learn and didnt have a use for.

Believe me when I say I don't have money for a kit... I first need to buy a keyboard (my first instrument) rig before I can consider a drum kit. And that includes a stage piano, synth module, vocoder, mic, PA, A/B box...

Oh right lol. Vocoders are cool.

Second link is a bad one. It says that movng the forearm with the wrist is acceptable. It is definately not. I've played four years of traditional. If you are moving your forearm at all(except twisting) you are not playing it correctly.

Thanks, that's also what my book says. :thumb: Basically the only problem I have is grip. Everything else I can do just fine.
If I happen upon a free-standing practice kit next year, I'll start working on some proper technique.

Just for the hell of it I watched a video each of Steve Gadd, Jojo Mayer, Peter Erskine, Buddy Rich, and Jeff Queen.
Why is it that they move their forearm in ways other than just twisting if it is "not acceptable?"

My comment mainly applies to learning on snare only. If you are just learning you don't want your forearms to move.
