So I'm going to be getting electric drums. It has a MIDI output for recorded drum parts. I'm planning to make drum parts and use my friend's DI box for bass/guitar and make some songs.
When I make these drum parts, how exactly does it work on the computer? Is it just a normal MIDI file that goes right to the computer?
Also, has anyone had experience with electric drums, and do they sound good for rock/metal? I'm not looking for an exceptional sound, but I don't want some cheesy 80s poprock MIDI drums either.
Thanks in advance.

The MIDI data will be sent to your specified device (in this case, the computer).
It's just MIDI data, nothing fancy.
In terms of quality, that's largely dependent upon your synthesis device. If you use a cheesy sounding MIDI engine, you'll get cheesy sounding MIDI drums. If you look around for a good piece of software, the results will be immediately obvious.

It does. Do you happen to know what brand and model they are/what model the module he uses is?
Can't you just use the midi signals to trigger audio samples that have been recorded from real drums?

I'm sure you can. But it's the drumset aspect of it. Literally playing the drumset rather than clicking a mouse.
That's not what I meant. After the notes have been hit and recorded as midi you could simply use those midi notes to trigger certain samples.
