So I've been playing both electric and acoustic guitar for upwards of 5 years and I'd like to think I've become pretty proficient at the guitar. My problem now is singing. Lately I've been listening to a LOT of different singer songwriters, the main ones being Jack Johnson and Iron & Wine, and I believe I can write halfway decent acoustic songs, I just can't sing for crap. I am in a quite popular ska band but I don't sing, and that band is on hold due to mass amounts of schoolwork for the rest of the band. So recently I've been writing lots of acoustic solo stuff, and having various friends sing on them, but I'm running out of random people so I want to start singing myself.
Any help with this? Any tips, lessons, guides, websites, anything would be fantastic to help me not be such a sh'itty singer. Thanks d=]

You may want to go to the Jam Session for this; just a suggestion because this forum doesn't get much action. Ever.
Anyway, try some breathing excersises and using your diaphragm to push the words out. You could also try vocal excersises (vowels, consonants, enunciation will be helped).

What do you mean by "I can't sing worth crap"? You can't hit the right notes? Or you think your voice is boring and not unique enough? ....

It would really help if you posted a clip.

Yeah, I can't hit the right notes. And it's generally just very untrained and cracks when I try to hit certain notes or carry notes out and things like that.

you should record yourself and find out where you need the most work (eg which notes are harder for you to hit) and practice those. Get a vocal coach too, it seems expensive but to make it as a musician you're going to have to make sacrifices to get to your ultimate goal...
good singing doesn't happen over night, you'll have to eat correctly and do vocal warmups every day. With any other instrument, you only play and practice when it's in your hands, with voice, you have to be vocally aware 24/7.

Hmm, are there any good online websites that could possibly substitute than an actual vocal coach? I know reading about it would have nowhere near the same progress as a vocal coach would, but money's tight these days.

Take voice lessons, read books on how to learn to sing, get some music for sight singing and tap out the notes on a piano (or on your guitar if you can read on guitar) while reading them to let your voice find the pitch, make singing part of your daily practice.
Develop goals and work towards them by improving your weakest attributes, that's the only way to develop as a musician.
