Hey guys, I know that the best mic to mic a guitar amp is an SM 57, but that isn't exactly in my price range right now, so I was wanting to know what the next best thing is. Should I use a dynamic mic, or a condenser mic?

do you want to mic just an amp or drums and vocals?
i always suggest the audix i5, they're cheaper and more durable and have the same quality sound. Save up and buy a pack of mics, don't just settle for crap... or you're going to get a crap sound

No he says he knows the sm57 is the best to mic a guitar amp.
And save for an sm57, you could spend half and get not even a tenth of the quality, its worth the wait.

there i fixed my question, yes the sm57 is good so why buy something cheap now when you can wait only a little longer to get a better sound?
TS don't waste your time with low grade gear, you'll end up spending more money because you'll eventually buy the nice gear later anyways...

You could try other dynamics, like other models by shure, but the price of a 57 is about as cheap as they get for serious stuff. I suggest finding one secondhand

Not cool. You don't know the situation. I can't afford a 57 right now, and I have a job. I have rent, heat, food, and tuition to pay for.
To TS, Shure makes another series of mics called the "PG" ("Performance Gear") Series. They're designed more for durability and live use than for sonic properties alone (though the SM series isn't exactly fragile or high-end anyway). The PG 48 does a pretty good job from what I've heard. I've also made extensive use of the PG 45 and find them pretty versatile as well. Audio Technica just released the ATM PRO 63, which is a newer version of a mic I have and use a lot of the time.
