Today my friend told me about this thing connects to your computer, and it has inputs where you can plug in instruments (for now I only need one that would have an input for guitar). But he said he doesn't remember the name of it. Does anyone know of some decent products like that? Also, what are they even called?
Thanks in advance.

The term you are looking for is "audio interface."
The actual device you want is most likely this:

That looks like what I want. Do you think it would work with a program like Audacity?

Probably. Audacity usually does a good job of recognizing devices so long as your computer recognizes them.
