Yamaha Rydeen.
there's alot of choice in that price range:
premier
yamaha
tama
pearl
pacific
mapex
sonor etc etc
what you need to do i look at each kit, try it out, see which offers what you want (hardware, finishes etc). alot of the kits in intermediate range offer alot of the same things. so check into mounting systems, type of wood, supplied hardware and see what you'll prefer
also check out ebay; there's alot of good second hand deals. i got a £500 kit for £200, second hand and its great.
in terms of new kits, you'll be best checking out mapex and sonor - they seem to offer the best value for money. yamaha and premier are both good choices though. i would avoid pearl (not quite the same quality woods) and tama (poor after sale service).
alot of this will be down to personal preference: go to a music store and try out all the different kits. check out websites to expand your selection and get cheaper prices. do alot of research, as this kit will likely last you a while

I was in the same position as you, looking for a decent kit in that range, and after much hunting about, I seriously recommend the Mapex M-Birch above everything else.

For £500 - £600 you could get the next one up, Pro-M, if you prefer that (which pitchfork doesnt :P)
Oh also some places let you try kits out before you buy, I know wembley drum centre does but there are probably others.

Why are they totally kickass compared to say a Pearl Export?

Because pealr export is made of poplar, it's overpriced for what it is, and it has nothing decent over the m birch or pro m

Yamaha Stage Custom, it is around £550, and come with 700 series hardwear.
It is quite a good buy.

Nah i'm a birch man, the Pro m isn't the next one up its simply made of a more expensive wood, the wood is personal preference.
And yeah it pwn's an export so much itsnot even funny. Come on the export is made of a cheap wood, it has a bad mounting system, the hardware is pretty cheap, not to mention it's way overpriced. The export in short is a glorified intermediate kit.
With mapex you get more than what you pay for, pearl you get like half what you pay for.

Pitchfork, AFAIK exports come with 800 series hardware. Which i find to be excellent.
