View Full Version : Fun Silly way to Increase Double Bass Speed and Control

Playing Dance Dance Revolution!

Obviously there's nothing better than just practicing double bass, but I hadn't played DDR in a while, I played last night for a good hour, and today, on the kit, double bass felt just the slightest bit better.

It's cross training in a sense, DDR relies a lot on the muscles in your leg when moving quickly from arrow to arrow, building up some of the same muscles you'd use playing heel up.

It also is a great way to "put" rhythms in your feet. A lot of the more advanced songs have all kinds of weird patterns, as well as straight "runs", where you're pretty much running in place, which is a great trainer for metal style db 16ths. And it links your feet to the music, which translates into bass parts that fit the music more appropriately, you'll just "feel" it better.

Ah, and lest forget overall endurance. It'll improve the amount of time your legs will last, as well as increasing overall lung capacity and physical fitness, becuase it's one hell of a cardiovascular workout.

Run to your local arcade and try it out, it's hella fun, especially for musicians. Home option:

http://www.stepmania.com/

You can download that, buy a PS2 dance pad, and get a PS2 to USB converter, and download a billion songs to play for free at your house.

DDR is good for t3h feetz.

You're an idiot. Practice is better than playing an unrelated game at improving your drumming.

Well of course practice is irreplaceable, this is a fun form of cross training, I know it's helped me out, plus it's fun as hell. No need to get pissy.

Aww, now you guys don't have to harsh on him so badly.

He said it wasn't a total replacement, and most certainly he never said that playing DDR would make you TEH DUBBLE BASS MAST3R.

And...DDR is fun. Speaking of, I havn't played in freaking forever. That may need to change.

Im not fully asian, therefore I cannot master DDR.

I am however half asian, so I can attempt and only fail a little.

Yeah, I dunno if I'd say it helps your double bass so much as it does keep your body and brain on edge by giving it different rhythmic challenges other than drumming.

Pretty fun, very fun after a few drinks.

Haha what a good idea!

Though I think playing Iced Earth songs is probably a better way to build stamina :p

oh yeah, don't go running if you're trying to improve your double bass. That's just silly too. What does stamina have to do with drumming?!

DRR is fun as hell and can wear you out in no time if you're a lazy bastard like half the people who are dogging the game.

hey sync, since when can drummers do nothing but play their drums? There aren't too many of us here that are making a living by playing drums, and even those that do are more than likely to have some other hobbies.

haha, everybody has other hobbies. Even the guys who pay bills with their drumming.

Let the kid play his video games and have some fun. At least you can work up a sweat with DDR. Try that with almost any other electronic entertainment...

This thread is funny lol. I havent played DDR in a while (last time i went to the cinema with friends and went in the arcade after).

It may help your fitness and stamina which may help like 5% of your drumming if your doing 300bpm drum solos and endless crap (cough* joey cough*) but just practice your double bass on a drum with a metranome and you will get better alot faster then playing on a dance game!

Edit: To thread starter: Try getting one of your friends to practice double bass on your head maybe?

Okay I don't see why you guys are giving the TS such a hard time, you can disagree with him but he has a valid point. DDR is a decent workout, it deals with music and it strengthns the leg muscles. He never said it was "the miracle fix to double bass without practice" he simply said a fun way to increase double bass. In fact he even said "fun silly way" and now some douche is going to come and say "its silly so why do it?" because its fun and it builds endurance. Stop being such dicks... Believe it or not kids these forums were once a great place were new ideas were taken into consideration, then if they sucked they were shot down, not shot down before even thinking about it.

:to aaron... that was a pretty bad burn!

Umm, I don't know why you guys are dogging on the thread started so badly. I can personally atest to the validity of his post. It really does improve stamina which is a big part of drumming unless you are playing some pretty boring stuff. And to all the people who said that you can spend an hour on your pedals rather than an hour on the DDR pad, I would rather be with my friends at Main Event playing DDR and laser tag than at home hearing a metronome for 60 minutes.

True, and untrue... For instance... "It really does improve stamina which is a big part of drumming unless you are playing some pretty boring stuff." couldn't be further from the truth. I don't know when I've heard a drummer say "wow that gig was really fun, I'm so tired... I bet I'm going to be sore" If the drummer is playing a difficult gig, he should be sweaty and tired from the focus. Thats beyond the point though, the point is that this is a valid thread

My friend plays DDR, but he always does the ones that are above his "skill level" so he's basically just stomping around un a weird, completely un-smooth manner, it's actually kind of sad to watch.

I looks like an elephant trying to play it with 2 legs. So ungraceful.

Around here, it's only emo kids and asian kids that are any good at DDR. Unfortunately, I'm neither, therefore I can only do the most basic songs.

haha, actually that does look suspicious, but no way is that me, looks like he's an Avenged sevenfold fan? Not the way I roll. Oh wait thier symbol a7x? haha, whatever, it's not me.

And jesus, no way was I expecting this many replies, One day and 335 views adn 33 responses? Guess all the tr00metal kids really want that speed.

Yeah, I totally don't condone this as a replacement for just sitting down with your friendly metronome and working through some stick control, but rather as a "fun and silly" way to improve while having fun outside of the drum kit.

And god yes, alcohol + 2 DDR pads = fun and titty jiggles.

Haha, well that sucks.

I play DDR 'cause...eh, it's...fun. I lived in Japan, it wore off on me.

Contrary to popular belief, I don't even really LIKE anime. Megatokyo's pretty cool, but other than that...ugh.
