How have these forums in any way helped you?

Have they lead you to pick up new techniques? If so what?

How about help on something that you didn't know you could fix yourself saving you money?

Anyother way these forums have helped you, lets show some appreciation.

I picked up a lot but as the forum has matured each thread is less useful.

I got me a bass that someone yelled out. I made a thread almost a year ago, asking if I should get a Stingray or a Jazz. Then someone yelled out 'warwick.' And so thats why I have a warwick. :thumb:

I didn't know how to double thumb until reading up on mx. And the music review site helps me with new releases.

Vote what is supposed to be "you mean, How have I helped Mx"

But seriously what a terrible typo.

MX helped me a bunch in the begining, now it seems like the same stuff over and over again, though once in a while something neat pops up.

MX was great for exposing me to different solo bass artists, plus I like the Jazz forum ;)

That sums it up to a tee, ladies and gentlemen.

It helped me with a few techniques such as DTing and tapping. But I don't really do much of either of those anymore because they don't really have room in what I play. Now I just come here to hang out (I am such a loser) and to help out where I can.

I just come to chill and listen to everyones music. The community started out with not many of us really being able to play but now most of the regulars have been playing for years now and are starting to get recognized, record, release music, etc.

In about another year, mx will probably be half noobs asking advice, but mostly gig stories and new song plugs.

I know I don't post much, but I definately feel like a owe a huge debt of graditude to almost everyone who actually takes the time to post. Basically all of my theory knowledge comes from MX or sister sites of MX. I would also say all my gear knowledge comes from off here (effects pedals, bass's, amps, etc.). And one more thing, my playing philosophy has evolved with what I've read and heard on MX, when people post their songs and I hear some the techniques they use. Oh and a lot of the major bass guys, like Jaco and such. So, thanks guys!

I was a complete and utter n00b when I first came here, and I was like "Crap, everything is so ridiculously hard to play." Over time, though, that fades away and you become better, and the past is something that you can laugh about.

Without MX, though, my being exposed to solo musicians and whatnot would have been slower. I started listening to solo artists about the same time I came to this board and started posting, so that just fueled the flame. I don't ever listen to solo musicians anymore unless it is a piano piece, though.

All-in-all, I have actually learned a great deal from MX, and I am thankful for that.

Of course, my time spent on here could actually be done in my room studying and practising, but hey!

When I was a bass n00b, it was quite helpful. The forums always gave me a basis to evaluate new equipment I wanted to get, counsel me when I felt underrated by my band, stuff like that.

But, as my overall forum time went down, I almost never find the time to visit this place anymore :( Still, it's interesting to to visit every now and then, though there is not much I check out regarding techniques and so on.

One of those, if you immerse yourself with other musicians you get better.

But as it is I think everyone is starting to find their own voice and less threads are useful for the majority

It helped me a lot back when I was starting out playing. Now, it's much more like, "OK, there are newcomers and I've been through what they're going through so I can give them a hand" but I don't really glean much info from here.

Most of us are a pretty weird group. Between 2001 to the beginning/middle of 2003, there were barely any people on this forum and it was really tight knit. Everyone knew each other and the Pit and places like that were a big source of community. Then, the summer of 2003, a lot more users came like this one loser:

<---

Those kids all learned a lot and a lot of them peaced, some of them stayed:

<---

Same with a lot of other users on here.

The same thing happened in 2004 but with a higher "retaining rate" and it also happened in 2005, hence the large number of 2005s and 2006 on here.

I've been here for over 3 years, so, on one side, it's great to look back at the memories on this forum but if you think about it, how much can you really learn from an online forum as unprofessional as this? By unprofessional, I mean, we're mostly fairly inexperienced players, save a few. Sure, you get guys with tons of experience like jimbobntr, havic, and left shoe but ultimately, most of us just play bass for fun. We can only discuss issues for so long before they pop up again.

...I dunno where I'm going with this so I'll just stop.

I've stopped looking at most threads to be honest. But back in the day I'd sift through anything that looked remotely useful and it usually benefitted me somehow. Now I'm just here out of habit, the competitions and the peeps.

I think in terms of gear, production, and the technical side of music, my university course has helped me more. But in terms of music theory, technique and styles, MX has been a massive help.

Of course, without MX, I'd never have gotten into music enough to enroll in a University course!

These days I think there's not as much MX teaches me. That's not to say I've mastered the instrument - far from it. But I do seem to spend more time giving advice than seeking it these days. That, and of course helping out the running of the site.

That's exactly how I see it for me, too. It's like I started out here a total n00blet (I still lol at myself but I think everyone does) then slowly got more and more respectable (for lack of a better word...I'm not that cocky :() and eventually one day, I was like, "Holy crap, I'm a mod."

It's been a good place to chat and get to know people that are not my age. Most of you are around the age of my kids, which is also about the age that I still feel like :) So, rock on!
