So, I just downloaded gypsy punks and holy ukranian ****.

I havent heard punk this great since I found This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb during last spring. This is such a sweet band.

What're they like? Take eastern-european folk music and have it make a baby with jello biafra. That's about it.

the lyrics are awesome, heres some from their song "Immigrant Punk"

"Upon arrivin to the melting pot
I got pencilled in as goddamn white
Now that I am catagorized
Officer gets me neutralized"

such awesome stuff.

also, I realize they probably arent anything new, but I come to the punk forum like twice a month max, so whatever.

I didn't mean I downloaded HOly Ukranian. I got gypsy punks and I typed Holy Ukranian Sh*t as an expression.

However, If I did have something like that I'd send it to you fo sho.

sorry for getting your hopes up or anything like that.

also, are there any bands that sound like gogol?

Gogol Bordello remind me a lot of Latin music...which is weird since they're Eastern European but yeah. Good band, supposedly way better live than on CD due to hijinks up the wazoo.

Here's something:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ABY07S03

This song is free to download off the band's website, but it's a massive hassle to get to it (they have this weird jukebox program going on that opens far too many windows). It's klezmer.

thanks alot, downloading as I type

I'll edit this post with my thoughts

EDIT: I liked it alot, mainly because of the lyrics/message though. It didn't qutie contain the same ruckous music that gogol bordello posses (at least until the end). Still a really powerful song though.

"I had a baby but the settler bullet killed it" was the best line for sure.

To hear similar bands get the soundtrack to ''Everythings Illuminated'' which stars Eugene Hutz from Gogol Bordello. The film is also funny too, Eugene plays a hilarious Ukrainian B-Boy whoes hero is Micheal Jackson.

Ive got Gypsy Punks and Multi Kontra Culti Vs. Irony.

Those are their best 2 albums, more so Gypsy Punks. Voi-La Intruder is closer to straight forward gypsy music, theres no punk on it at all. It's their weakest album I think, but it's still good though!

isn't their "awesomeness" reliant on the fact that they are gyspy? I would certainly respect the MORE for being able to put out an album of just gypsy music without the contemporary addition of screaming, distorted guitars, and everything else. However, this is just a thought, as i have not actually heard the album yet, as i have little money in my pocket.. *shame*

anyway, just a thought. not trying to lay into you!

You're right in a way, but what I love is their ability to combine gypsy music with punk and dub - this is where I feel Gogol Bordello's awesomeness comes from. Their Voi-La album lacks a lot of the energy of the other records, which is what I think makes Gogol Bordello a truly entertaining band.

But like I said, it's not a bad album - the quality of the songwriting is fantastic, hell it even had an acoustic version of Start Wearing Purple! However it just isn't up to the standard of the other two as far as I'm concerned.

Gogol Bordello are Probably my favorite band right now along site with Streetlight and Against Me!

I've seen them live 2 times this year, and I'm going to again in about a month. They definitely put out the best show I have ever seen - By a mile. Last time was on this little venue. While playing the last track (undestructable) Eugene crowdsurfed on a bass drum. Then they got almost the entire crowd on the scene.
It was one of the best experiences I've had this year.
Next time will be at a bigger venue - I hope they can pull it of as well.

Their music reminds me of third-wave ska. It has the same beats, just with accordions.

I would love to see them live, you can tell just from the studio albums that would be one hell of a show.

Latin music? Ska? You people are ****ing crazy. To me, and I'm sure many others, they sound like no one else, but have similarities with bands like Slavic Soul Party! and whonot.

Their earlier albums are really good, and the songs Voi-la Intruder, Passport, and East Infection are amazing

The harmonies and beats to a lesser degree are very Latin-influenced it seems.

I've never heard music so original I can' draw comparisons to other styles of music bar the weirdest types of World music I listen to.

Definitly Gypsy Punks: Underdog World Strike. Fantastic CD.

I saw them live at the wedge in pompey

Was drinking a load of vodka beforehand, the support band were ****ing awful, Eugene's DJing was great though

The gig was so explosive man!! I was bouncing, skanking and was the first two people to crowdsurf (if you went over the bars twice u were thrown out, but no one was) so ****ing amazing

A lot of latin music is derived from eastern European and Asian gypsy music. Romany and all that.

Gogol Bordello are ok. It all gets a bit much after a while for me.

It kind of sucks that it's at Carling Academy though, I'd rather it was somewhere smaller. But man it's gonna be good. He better jump into the crowd again on that drum.

Henrik
11-01-2006, 02:32 PM
That thing he does with the drum is so rad.

The venue I'm seeing them at is also a fair bit bigger than it was last time. But last time they sold out so this one is actually an extra concert that they've agreed to make because of their popularity here.
I hope they can pull it of.

I'm currently sitting in my room banging my head off my monitor. Didn't know Gogol were playing Glasgow tonight. Just moved here recently for Uni (any of the wegies here want to point me in the direction of a Glasgow local music forum? haven't found one yet, we had a decent one in Aberdeen).

Gogol Bordello were amazing last night shame right enough he did'nt jump in thecrowd.Go and see them!

I got a point and sing a whole line from Eugene, what a legend
And saw a fight

What do you think was the best song of the night Bukowski?

Bukowski
11-02-2006, 01:59 PM
Eugene is a legend, yeah!

My favourite was probably 60 Revolutions, when that song gets real fast it's crazy. The whole set was great, but as i thought, he didn't jump with the drum because the stage at Carling is too high up. When I saw them at the Garage the stage is almost level with the audience, so it was better there. What did you think of the other bands dude?

That sucks man. I don't know any forums, but I use tickets-scotland as my main reference, most of the shows are in Glasgow, plus it gives info on smaller, more local bands playing in clubs/bars and such. Are you at Glasgow Uni btw?
