Say you start with your one chord. Then a measure later you've got a V. So instead of playing your major scale up to the V. You play |1 3 4 #4 | 5
AKA: in C
--------------
---2-3-4-5---
-3------------
--------------
You can also use leading tones for notes. Ususally the fret below the note you want to play is a leading tone, as well as the fret above. This is all a ****tay explanation, I'll try to expand on it later.

i use chromatic notes alot when i improvise. for example, im im soloing in a major mode, i could "run"? up the scale hitting only the notes in the major scale, and when i run back down, i could use the chromatic scale.
example: d maj
------------------------9-11-12-11-9---------------------------------
---------------9-11-12----------------12-11-10-9--------------------
---10-9-10-12-------------------------------------12-11-10-9------------
-12------------------------------------------------------------12-10-----
play the notes as 8th notes
