I'm looking for new heads on my Tama Superstar and have decided to go with Evans. The question is should I go for EC2's or G2's? I play a lot of rock, with punk and metal thrown into the mix therefore I need heads that have a lot of attack and have a deep sound. Which would you guy's go for?

G2s, but one plys will sound much better in general. The EC2s are much too dead to sound good.

I like neither i'm a single ply whore myself but yeah G2's if you are into that whole low tuned thuddy tom thing.
By the way dave, you say you want to try EC2's some time but then you say "they arent even as dead as you'd imagine" well how would you know? from the sounds of things you haven't tried them.

I have heard them on a kit at a store but i want to try them out myself, as in buying EC 2 for my own kit and experimenting with them. Thats what i was after

EC2 is evil. Tis quite hard to get a good sound out of them...

True, he could get more resonation out of a hollowed out tree than most people could out of a drum.

I found I had to tune my toms a little higher than normal to get a sound I liked, but I did like it.

Not to mention has higher quality gear than most of this board and has very unique sizings. 8x8, 10x10, 16 and 18..

He didnt use EC2 while recording. Look at the newsletter pictures from late 2005.

well, i have coated ec2's, and theyre great, if you have the right sizes, if your drums are big enough theyll sound great, but if you have fusion sizes id recomend g2's.

I'd go with Smooth White Emps, They're abit warmer than G2/Emps but not stupidly muffled like the specialty heads. That warmth'll let you tune down slightly too to muffle it.

It depends what kit he is on actually. He played 8 10 14 16 with Belew. and had a 22 and a 24 kick.

i was about to bring that up, anyway, actually contributing my part to this thread, I really like the G2's, if you want a really good idea of how they sound, go to youtube and find when system of a down plays live, john uses them. I do like the EC2's, but they've got a really plastic sound, which I really like in some songs, but definately not appropriate for all genres. So in conclusion, G2's and EC2's both have good sound, but G2's are a better all around head.

G2's = Emps
EC2's = Pinstripes
basically
i find hydraulics to resemble more to pinstripes than EC2's. they may have that little 'ring' similarity, but pins are much more dead than the ec2.
