Advertisiing (free advertising, merchandise, flyers (paid advertising) and perhaps merchandise and business cards)
+
Word of mouth (tell everyone you know, indclude it in irrelivant emails, do anything to plaster your name over the town)
Remember, venue owners don't care if you are a good band or not as long as you pull in the punters to buy their beer they don't care, which is why its always improtant to invest time and money into getting people to come.
The minimum you should do is get 500 or 1000 flyers printed depending on gig size (quite cheaply done by todays standards) and hand them all out until they are all gone, stick a few up on lamp posts and stuff too.
We print our own it costs probably just over a tenner for 1000 with toner and paper and if we can get enough people in to get another gig there they pay for themselves.
Unless the venue is advertising on your behalf (which you rarely get round here).

the venue is for about 50-75 people and other bands usaly only pull like 35-50 at any one time
with family members we should be able to fill like 30

call people, myspace bulletins, emails, hand out **** at school, go to a rock-ish-type club (if you're over 18 or w/e) and meet people who look like they might come, but best of all:
tell them it's FREE!!!

Yeah and they will most probably ignore them or the people won't even be close to the gig.
/dosn't like myspace
Actually phoning or talking to someone is more likely to get someone to come. Phone everyone you know, between your band members that alone should bring in at least 30 or 40 if only have 3 members.

Fair enough, i'm too against myspace for my own good sometimes.
I prefer the manual ways of promoting which are more expensive but more effective.

We've just had 400 keyrings printed up with our band name and number on it we are giving to venue owners and the like, with my blues rock band, and we've been chucking out business cards like theres no tomorow plastering our name in the mind's of the innocent in order to own this planet.
Already got 4 or 5 paying gigs from it so they're paying for themselves.

Myspace my friend.
I am going to a show tonight because a band said they were having one. I have nothing better to do.
