Lately i've been looking for a good distortion- does anyone have any recommendations?
I really, really, like fleas distortion- I have heard that he uses a Boss OBD-3 pedal. I've looked into those a bit and have gotten mixed reviews. Some people like them, others dont.
I would be happy to add this new sound to my rig-help and/or recommendations are appreciated:)

I quite like my Digitech XBD... its very versatile and can get a lot of sounds. Just make sure you get a powerpack because it eats batteries.

The best thing I can reccomend is to go to your local music shop and test out a bunch of stuff. You'll never know what you really like untill you test it out for yourself.
What one person here may like, you may really, ultimatley dispise.
That in mind, check out Boss and Digitech.

if this is not the only pedal you have/plan on having, i would suggest a 1 spot daisy chain.

The EBS multidrive is pretty kickass with no loss of low end.

The DOD 250 Preamp/overdrive pedal is awsome for adding git but keeping transparency. For low end growl the sansamp sabddi is great. You can't go wrong if you get both

i think flea uses his amp distortion tbh, the boss peddle is alright for that sort of thing, id sugest trying to find one of teh realy old dod tube distortion peddles though, they sound much more like it. i wouldnt suggest a bigg muff or similar things, there great but not for flea like tone.

EBS valvedrive, its a great pedal but its overkill unless you are very rich or use overdrive constantly.

From what I read somewhere, that was only the first batch or something, and the problem has been rectified

i hope they hav! :( both my basses are super active...(Warwick Streamer LX4 and G&L L2000) even in passive mode it feels like the G&L is much more powerfull than other basses...,

right now i just use either the little bit of OD/Distortion that i get from my tube head, or i use my USA Big Muff Pi. However, i would also like to get the ODB-3 or maybe a Sansamp bass driver.

Love it, however, it doesnt get a full distortion, more like a valve amp being driven hard

ah, sorry. i didn't remember the type of distortion you were looking for.
as for the sansamp bass driver: i dont own one, but i've used the original one before. i really dug it. great vintage amp 'roar'. i'll probably be picking up either the rackmount of it or the programmable one soon.

If you like Flea's distortion (ex. Around the World) I recommend you get the ODB-3. I have been able to reproduce it pretty well. It also gets a pretty good DFA 1979 tone.
I don't think it's really that versatile, but if you aren't too picky it would be a good choice.
Cons are that it does feedback if you have the gain too high or stand too close to your amp (at least it does for me). It also takes me a while to get a tone I like but I am a sort of audiophile.

I'd go with the BOSS.
Most other bass distortion sounds like ****.

I don't really find it weak sounding. Noisy? Incredibly.

I've had the ODB-3 for about 6 months and I reckon it's pretty versitile. I can get flea's tone on around the world, and come pretty close to Timmy C (as close as I can with my budget) plus it's great if you just want a boost or a litle bit of grit in your tone. but yeah, if you want flea's tone, I'd go with boss :thumb:

I really like my lows, my tones gotta be really thunderous in the lower register to make me happy.
Which is why I want a triamping rig, I like different tones for each spectrum.

Actually I see what you mean.. it does sound pretty muddy sometimes with too much bass.

I'd recommend a delay pedal with an adjustable feedback knob (like a Boss DD-6).
If not you can use a distortion, just turn the gain all the way up and crank the mids and highs, maybe play some harmonics and swell them with the volume knob.
