so ive got a punk band, but weve been searching for our own style/flare. weve gone from old school to pop punk to hard punk to hell knows what. but i think ive decided on a simple, feelgood, ska-ish punk sound. sort of laid back. VERY ska influenced. problem is: i dont have an effects pedal to find the sound in ska guitar. i dont know what chords are used. and we dont know a sax player...
so if anyone has any input on how to acheive this ska-ish sound, please post.
ps- if this is in the wrong forum, etc, plz redirect as opposed to delelting, etc.
thanks.

You don't need an effects pedal for ska guitar nor do you need a sax player.

There are no effects in ska because ska guitar is just clean and played with up strokes.
PS: I commend you heavily on making a noob topic that doesn't end with "Cheers! :chug:"

I thought a ska-strum was up-down and muting on the downstroke.

well ok then. at least you gave me some help, even if condescendingly. so the reson it sounds different is cuz its upstrokes? is it upstroked power chords that are mostly used? sry if my ignorance is pissing you off, but there arent many punks here, let alone rudies to ask.

If you wanna know about the precise strumming-style, you'd be best off asking in the Guitar Forum.

also get a strat or a tele and and play on clean. also ska doesnt use power chords, from what ive listened to.
if you have a huge trouble listening for sounds listen to som good ska. some other people can recommend better bands then me, but catch 22, musturd plug.

Ska is played on the top three or four strings. Not pwoer chords, like, barre chords and such. On clean.

Wrongo.
TS it depends on what type of ska sound you are trying to achieve. Do you want the standard 3rd wave ska guitar sound, or do you want the Catch 22/Streetlight Manifesto ska guitar sound?

You can save loads of money by turning up the treble, down the bass and compress it a little if you wanna go into that realm. I doubt he'd wanna spend all that money on a tele just to get a really trebely sound.

Learn to play "Propagandhi - Ska Sucks". Thats a fairly easy place to start if your just trying to get the strumming right.
