Oh I just can't keep a secret..
Me and my Dad went to PMT Birmingham on Saturday, I played loads of tasty basses including a Fender Jazz 24, Yamaha BB614 and a couple of Sandbergs. The BB614 was reduced from £350 to £270 as ex-demo (but totally mint). We both went away with very bad GAS pains.
Today my Dad phoned me up to meet me outside work at lunch. He said he'd bought me a new gig bag, I opened the boot (trunk for you Americans) and picked it up and it was somewhat heavier than expected. Opened it up and sat there was a nice shiny new Yamaha BB614 (Natural), w00t ! I'd never have expected my Dad to buy me something this pricey, but am well chuffed.
So how is it ? It's lovely.
The neck is very thin and reminds me of a Jazz. The action is currently a bit higher than i'd usually have it and it would benefit from some new strings (I don't like rotos).
The EQ is very powerful - distorts my Ashdowns preamp at around 3 input. It has the typical sound you'd expect from a P/J setup, but with the added bonus of active EQ. I think it looks stunning and i'm very happy with it.

Yep looks very hot. I didn't think the natural would look so nice on that bass, but boy was i wrong.

I find that headstock and body both awkward when paired up.

i like the chrome around the pickups, even though it's not so hot with the natural finish.
Some sort of high gloss black/red would look real mean on that bass..

Sweet, I wish my dad would randomly buy me basses.
Congrats.
No my thing though, I have always felt that the bodies were too big for the neck.

i'm not a fan of the body shape, too curvy for my liking, still, very lucky you are. congrats! :thumb:

It was weird waking up this morning and seeing it in the rack - it's not really sunk in to be honest.. my Dad usually wouldn't even buy me a beer.
I won't be giving it a proper review until i've put some decent strings on it, these rotos must have been played by some grubby kids.

Yep - I now live back in Birmingham.

Congrats on the new bass. I don't normally like the look of those basses but I will make an exception for that one. The natural is hawwt.

The BB shape doesn't do much for me, but they look far better natural than in the red/black color I usually see them in.

I almost bought one of those over my Warwick, they were that impressive.
But in the end... NAH
But then again, I got a BB1100S in a trade which sounds identical and plays the same :D

How dare you! Go and wash your mouth with soap!
Machines; you're going to love this bass! I totally love the tone I get from my BB3000 now. It sounds just so perfect.. Even when it's straight into the board, like how we recorded last saturday. I can't wait to have the song finished in a few weeks.. You guys are going to LOVE it, really :chug:

Refinish it in 80s pink and get some amazing tapping chops, the bass demands it :D

Hmmm maybe not pink !
I've adjusted the truss rod as it was loose - the action is now perfect and the bass has more life to it. I've also put my semi-new D'Addario Prosteels on it from my RBX - much better now.
