View Full Version : Review the last album you listened to
Let me be clear with this. These reviews aren't supposed to be Sputnik Music quality, with paragraphs and such. They are just supposed to give a little insight into what you think of the album. Below is a sample review I've done if you want to follow that format;
Senses Fail - Still Searching
Pros:
• Musicianship has drastically improved. To the point where they don't sound generic, but like a post-hardcore band with some talent without losing their FTDOD pop-punk roots.
• OMG solos?!
• Lyrics are a lot better than LIEY. That was always going to be a given though
• Some experimentation with post-recording effects, gang vocals and softer songs give it a lot more variety
Cons:
• Buddy's voice still has the power to make ears bleed. The music helps this out a lot more though
Best tracks: "Sick Or Sane (Fifty For A Twenty)", "Shark Attack", "All The Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues"
Overall rating: 8/10

I like this thread idea...but I'm not reviewing the B-52's. I'll listen to something else and do a review though.
Why thank you Vince. It's weird, VGAM has had this kind of thread for a while.
/me awaits other genre forums to steal idea

I took a listen to the new track on Senses Fail's myspace based on this review.
I kinda like it, although I haven't noticed a big improvement in musicianship. I always Buddy's voice, though.
I'mma check at the album some time.
They still sound generic, though :p

Alexisonfire - Crisis
third album from the candian screamo band. is really a mixture of their two previous efforts however fails in my opinion to create a sound of its own.
Pros
No really bad songs all are solid efforts.
For fans who preferred their s/t debut this album adopts a heavier sound than the more mellow watch out.
Increased use of their other guitarist on vocals adds more depth to their sound.
Cons
No real classic alexis tracks. nothing on the scale of accidents or pulmonary archery.
Dallas is the real talent of this band and his voice is what sets them apart. he is used more sparingly here
There arent as many of their trademark minute plus intros on this record.
More of the same really. no real transition from previous albums.

Fear Before The March Of Flames- The Always Open Mouth
Pros:
-Very interesting new direction for the band
-Excellent mix of ecletic guitarwork and weird melodies/harmonies
-Although there a lot more poppy and softer moments on the CD, it still retains the infamous Fear Before brutality.
-Really a breath of fresh air in the metalcore/post-hardcore scene
Cons:
-Sounds pretentious at points with all the electronics
-Dave's vocals are different. They're still really cool but just not as br00tal and awesome as Art Damage.

^I was pretty impressed by this album, but it was the first FBTMOF album I ever heard. Should I check out some different stuff by them? If so, what?

LOL Dallas sucks in Alexisonfire. They'd be better without him.
Everything I've heard from this album is terrible, and pretty much all of Watch Out! was disappointing.

Another one of the rappers I like, probably on my top 2, most people won't like it, but I love it cause I'm sweet like that. I like all the tracks a lot, so it rules. 10/10

Art Damage, their album before The Always Open Mouth, is their best but it's very different and may be hard to get into to. If you like the style on The Always Open Mouth (the poppy melodies matched with the heavy metalcore parts), you'd probably like their first effort Odd How People Shake. It's more accessible, but Art Damage is truly their best work.

Aphex Twin - Richard D. James Album
Pros:
• No lame cumming to daddy vocals/very little vocal samples at all
• I can pull ladies playing it in my car.
• Good playback value.
• Makes me feel like i'm flying/reminds me of listening to Brian Eno.
Cons:
• Can get boring .
Overall rating: 5/10

UNKLE - Psyence Fiction
Pros:
-Brilliant vocals and beats, the guest stars are all used to their full potential
-Eclectic, songs range from "rocking" to painfully beautiful Trip-Hop ballads
-DJ Shadow, everything he does is gold
Cons
-Songs can get dull after a while
Best Tracks
Rabbit in Your Headlights w/ Thom Yorke
Lonely Soul w/ Richard Ashcroft
Overall rating: 7/10 or 8/10 I'll figure it out before rating it on sputnik.

Feeder - The Singles
Pros:
- You get a different taste of them in each song.
- None of the songs sound the same.
- It's catchy music, but nothing like FOB or P!ATD.
- They're good at what they do.
Cons:
- Guitar, bass, all other instruments aren't very creative.
- Not wild and crazy, but more simplistic.
- Some songs towards the end are boring.
Overall Rating: 9/10

Pros
- Great for a quick listen or end-to-end session
- I can slap it on random and not have to worry about a bad song popping up
- They combine some of my favourite elements of rap and punk in with a weird ska sound
- Some excellent "eerie" horn sections
- Some very simple bass lines make for some great jamming sessions; adding in my own little variations is wicked.
Cons
- Erm...
- They broke up? :upset:
I guess I shouldn't listen to such awesome music. Then I could do a proper review :p

Really? Ew.
i prefer watch out to the s/t.
the slower more melodic bits in watch out make it more einteresting for me. aside from 4 or 5 songs i get bored of the first album.

Ugh Dallas Green.
Self-titled really bored me. It gets repetitive. Plus I hate listening to it because of the overflowing gayness of the first track.

Say Anything - ...Is A Real Boy
Pros:
- Max's voice and lyrics are both great.
- Some really catchy songs.
- Some great songs to scream along to if you want to let your anger out.
- A variety of different styles of songs.
- Some great instrumentation
Cons:
- Would be better if it included A Walk Through Hell.
- Some of the songs on the bonus disc are easy to forget.
- I honestly can't think of many more.

hes not the greatest songwriter but he has a good voice which sets alexis apart from other bands like them. city & colour have two or three good songs, i prefer alexis. i wouldnt listen to them very much if he wasnt in the band, or didnt sing in it.

Powerman 5000-Transform
Transform was released by Powerman 5000 in 2003. I didn't actually expect to like this album much, but I did. At first it takes a while to grow on you, but eventually it's a really great listen. The first half is basic, mainstream hard rock with a tinge of originality to it. However, the second half is A LOT better. By better I mean more experimental, catchier, not exactly what one would have expected of Powerman 5000 even though beforehand I'd only heard a handful of songs.

Nightmare of You - s/t
Debut album from ex-members of the movielife and glassjaw. influenced heavily by the smiths, joy division and other British indie rock bands.
This has many very catchy songs which borrow heavily from the smiths and morrisey whilst adding a more modern sound. the guitar work is reasonable if at times a little simple. a lot of basic chord patterns with a nice riff over the top. However a lot of the songs are indistiguisable and the lyrics make no real sense. The band should concentrate more on trying to carve out their own sound instead of copying others.
Pros
A very catchy album that is easy to listen to
Is quite different as far as im aware from most music currently being recorded
Brandon has a good original voice on recording, even if it is quite week live
Cons
Acoustic tracks are very poor
The lyrics are ridiculous and seem to have no real theme other than trying to be overly clever
Recommended Tracks

Saosin - Saosin
Pros:
• It's an actual Saosin full-length record. Srsly.
• Cove's voice sounds better than ever, especially on the re-recorded songs from Saosin EP
• Production is clear and well done, and makes the melodies sound better
• See point 1
Cons:
• Some songs sound quite generic, especially newer ones
• Most of the songs were leaked beforehand, so it wasn't much of a surprise for me
• The new version of "No Angel" is horrible, which used to be one of my favourite songs from them too.
Recommended tracks: "Sleepers", "Voices", "Bury Your Head", "Some Sense Of Security"
8/10

I really liked this album and I didn't get to hear the leaked tracks so most of it was new to me except older songs. Cove's voice has improved so much it sounds great. But I thought they ruined Bury Your Head, I think the new version is terrible.

I like new Bury Your Head. It doesn't sound too different from the album version, and you can actually hear Cove this time round.
Cobra Starship - While The City Sleeps, We Rule The Streets
Pros:
• What you'd expect from another FBR band; pop-punk with added pop
• Some really catchy and simple songs
Cons:
• For an album as pop-fueled as this, it is quite slow at times
• More stupidly long song titles
• Gets quite repetitive in almost every song
Recommended songs: "The Church Of Hot Addiction", "It's Amateur Night At The Appollo Creed", "Bring It (Snakes On A Plane)", "Pop Punk Is Sooooo '05"
