Well, since there was such a discussion going on in the Agalloch thread over Moonsorrow, I thought Id find the Moonsorrow thread. There wasn't any, so....
I'm seeing them live January 15th with Woods Of Ypres.
And the thread name is an english translation. The line is from Rauniolla.
(Hearken to the ravens' cry)
The group's earliest formation consisted of cousins Ville Sorvali (vocals and bass) and Henri Sorvali (guitar and keyboards) who released various demos that were much more characteristic as being symphonic black metal, musically, than future releases.
Their debut album, Suden Uni, recorded in the early 2000, was released in 2001, along with Tämä Ikuinen Talvi (This Everlasting Winter), a re-release of a 1999 demo. Suden Uni (translated as "A Wolf's Dream") was acclaimed by the fans and the reviews with its epic combination of Finnish paganism and folk elements. After recruiting Mitja Harvilahti and Markus Eurén, Moonsorrow started their first shows, releasing Voimasta Ja Kunniasta (Of Strength and Honour) in the late 2001. But the real takeoff for the band was the 2003 release Kivenkantaja (Stonebearer). In 2005 the band released their fifth album, Verisäkeet (Blood Verses).
In January 2006 the band played their first US show at the Heathen Crusade metalfest in Columbia Heights, MN.
Henri is also the keyboardist for Finntroll and a former session member of Ensiferum.
On the 7 March 2006, Moonsorrow announced on their official website that they have signed a 2-album contract with Spinefarm Records, and that their next album is slated for release in late 2006. On June 19 it was revealed that the upcoming album will feature guest vocals by Thomas Väänänen, the vocalist of Thyrfing.

Moonsorrow slays christians by the handful. Seriously though they are one of my favourite bands, have been since about March of 2006. I've got all their albums and really like them all. Favourite album is a tie between Voimasta Ja Kunnista and Verisakeet. Favourite song is Sankarihauta or Karunhyski(sp). I've got all four of their albums and can't wait for the fifth.

Not really. The only stuff I've really heard is little scarps of info from the studio diary posted on their website. Mostly it is just random crap about how they get drunk alot, and pictures to go along with their drunkeness. It's actually really amusing.

I have Verisakeet and Voimasta. I love this band. I plan on buying those 2 albums for sure, as I only have downloaded copies so far.
My desktop is a Voimasta wallpaper

Wow I think almost everyone who has ever posted in the Folk/Viking metal thread has had Voimasta as their wallpaper atleast once. I know I did for awhile and I know Txus did and I think Animosity did aswell.
Stormrider
09-22-2006, 09:47 PM
Heh, well I rather Verisakeet, but there's no wallpaper for that one. Besides, Voimasta makes a nicer background then the album cover of Verisakeet.
Apocalypticon

Voimasta has a much more epic picture than Verisakeet anyway. Anywayz I'm off to a friends house so I'll talk to you Heathenous Pagans later.

I just realised I forgot to use a smiley. It was supposed to be sarcastic. Well, well. Better luck next time.
And, by the way, Sankarihauta is sick!
Have you seen that one live? It's MUCH BETTER \m/
No, unfortunately I haven't.
I haven't seen it live perse :p

I can upload any of their albums for you if you can't find them in the DU.
And guys I might be going to see Moonsorrow in Toronto on January 15. I talked to my friend and he wants to go. And then we're gonna maybe stay for awhile and then we'll go see Dragonforce in Montreal on January 25. If this actually goes through I'll be so happy.

That's what my friend said. I'm not positive though because I haven't actually checked their website or anything to see when and where they're open. Even if their not and I still got to see Moonsorrow that would be awesome.

Nah, I just wasn't sure of myself, so I took it off haha.
And yeah, I've never really looked for their cd's in a store, because the last time I went into a cd store, I went in to buy the new BG album, and kinda forgot to look for them. I wasn't into them as much as I am now though.
Anglachel

I see.
Apparently theres only one HMV woth a worthwhile metal selection in Toronto. I'm not going to other stores yet cause I still have a 50 dollar gift certificate for there from my birthday (July)
Stormrider

I wish I had a 50$ gift certificate :upset:
I have a store called Archambault which has loads of stuff. So, I have a pretty good chance of finding it there.
Read properly, Txus. :-P. I went in the store to get the new BG. Not anything else. :)

I've been a huge fan of Moonsorrow since I was first introduced to them. I have all 4 of their official releases, as well as their 1997 demo "Metsa", their 1997 Promo, and their 1999 Demo "Tämä Ikuinen Talvi".....so everything of their discography besides their first demo.
My favorite album of theirs would be "Viomasta Ja Kunniasta"...
I beleive that Heimdallr specifically created a 4th human race greater than Thralls Kin and named them Moonsorrow. This is how we have such a brilliant band.
Anglachel
09-25-2006, 08:53 PM
What?
Stormrider

Heimdallr and Thralls Kin must be a character and... a group of people ?
My guess...
Anglachel
09-25-2006, 09:01 PM
I see......I think.
Well I was hoping someone might know a thing or two about paganism, being that Moonsorrow is a PAGAN band!
Anyways, Heimdallr is Odins son who was set forth to create the people on the earth. He created three groups of people, and Thralls kin is the one that was the strongest of all the people he created. I was implying that Moonsorrow are the 4th people, since they kick so much ***! Understand now?

I guessed right then :p

Well the language the lyrics are in really shouldnt affect the music and overall sound all that much...

Moonsorrow > Finntroll by about one million percent, because Moonsorrow aren't a novelty act and Finntroll are.
And on the subject of Karhunyski, right at about 9:00 minutes or so when Ville screams, that is just pure bliss. That is probably my favourite part of any Moonsorrow song ever made.
EDIT: At 9:42 and 9:49 he does it.
To me Finntroll whilst still great, arent nearly at what Moonsorrow are, in that Finntroll are too fast. While fast is good I find they just sort of "go off" and do not rely on melody like Moonsorrow does. Also Moonsorrow just has a more refined and interesting sound. My opinion, however.
Anglachel

Finntroll have excellent speed!! =o
But yeah, they still arent what moonsorrow are.

What are everyone here's thoughts on Suden Uni. I think that it is a really good album and for the longest time I liked it equally to Voimasta. However since it is the first of Moonsorrow's releases it really doesn't feature alot of the elements that make Moonsorrow themselves. You get alot more of a generic folk/viking metal sound, but the songs on that album are still really well writtent. Especially Ukosenjumalan Poika which was the very first Moonsorrow song I ever heard and it was the song that made me first satrt liking them.
