I can recommend that you skip My Bloody Valentine. As for Mahavishnu Orchestra, anything off of Birds of Fire will do you good.

For Can just get Tago Mago or Future Days. Van Der Graaf Generator's Pawn Hearts is an essential progressive rock album, pick that up too. For the Grateful Dead I would recommend checking the end of my FA near the top of the page, there's about 15 songs that I chose to upload as a sampler. Actually, if you post your email I can send you Pawn Hearts and the GD sampler.
