Just thought it would be cool to have somthing on the 90's. I apologise if there is already a thread and I missed it, please let me know...
I'll start off with two new releases & a question for all you 90's rock fans...
Alice in Chains: has a new release out... a greatest hits album. What do you think of bands doing greatest hits albums.
Secondly, for anyone who was a fan of Rage Against The Machine or Chris Cornell, Audioslave released a new album: Revelations. I like the whole album much better than I like the single "original fire". Your Thoughts?
RATM are my fav band of all time  Never got to see them though... I got into them after they broke up. :(

90's alternative music is amazing, better than the general cheese found in the 80's, and more in touch with today's ideas than any 70's or earlier music is.
Most of my favourite bands and artists started in the 90's, or have their roots there.
Tool, A Perfect Circle, Opeth, The Mars Volta, Muse, Radiohead, In Flames, Jeff Buckley, etc.
Edit: Pearl jam always struck me as having too many 80's sensibilities somehow and I could never quite relate. possibly because they're very american too.
Soundgarden have some good songs, usually not their most popular singles from what I've heard. And Cornell had an amazingly powerful voice.
I'm not a huge Nirvana fan, but I like what they did to the popular alternative music scene, and they have a few decent songs, and had a lot of raw energy.
90's took away the focus from technical ability and glam in music and put it onto being more gritty and raw, and emotional (I'm generalising), which is a good thing for me. Obviously there was a lot of ****, but I always prefer the more arty bands rather than the insanely popular ones, Smashing Pumpkins and Porcupine Tree being other good examples.

For Alice In Chains' greatest hits album, its good timing, they r on the road performing those songs live for the last time, and its good for fans who might be getting nto them at this time. AIC is probably my favorite band from the
90's

90's pop rock is the best pop rock ever. Third Eye Blind, Counting Crows, that band that played the Closing Time song, that stuff was great. Sure, it was three simple chords, but it's really fun music...
Then we get into the underground. Most of the bands I listen to now started out in the mid to late 90's, but I don't really consider them 90's bands, because they still make music today...

OK, first off i think that the 90's were sweet! Loads of my favourite bands were around in that era. Rage Against The Machine, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Guns N' Roses, Motley Crue, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth and Sloan.
And ok, i know Motley Crue and GN'R and the like are consider 80's bands, but they were still round in the 90's so it's good enough for me!
And everyone know's Audioslave will never beat RATM (not that they are bad, just different and not as good), just like new 2000's GN'R will never beat late 80's GN'R.
Morphine, The Push Stars, Counting Crows, Radiohead, The Flaming Lips are a few good ones.

That's just about the most obvious statement I've ever heard. Although I agree, 60's and 70's music would've been much better if the bands back then could have predicted the future.
Tool and AIC are my 2 favourite 90's bands.

I'm just saying I find it easier to empathise with more modern music with more modern ideas. A lot of music from the 70's and earlier has dated badly, because of production methods, lyrical content, musical sounds/textures, etc.
It's a shame really. I really think Led Zep would have been my favourite band if I'd have been a teenager in the 70's, but as it stands, I find, while a lot of their stuff is almost timeless and classic, a lot of stuff is badly dated.
And don't get me started on 80's production and styles.

Yeah I kinda knew what you meant. I just felt an overwhelming urge to make a sarcastic comment.
I'm interested to know what Zeppelin songs imparticular you think are badly dated though. They do have a couple stinkers, but those I find, for the most part, are just bad songs and not so much dated.
