Hey,

Well I was playing on my Musashi Oak snare and wasn't hearing the dry crack as much, so I check if i have the snare wires cranked pretty tight and i notice 4 of the strings out of whack. So thursday I'm going to GC to buy some new ones.

Now my question is, can anyone recommend a brand that GC carries and also how many strings I should get? I really prefer the loud dry crack my oak snare gives off with the PS3 head on it, so what amount of strings would suit me best?

Thank you in advance.

I have 42 strand puresound matte black snare wires there soooo badass but for you they may give you to much crack!

I recommend puresound or gibralter and get 20-30 strand for a nice crack!

The reason it doesn't have as much crack is because you've stuck a muffled head of it. Swap it out for an amb and see how that goes before overhauling the wires.

Any other day Aaron I wouldn't argue with you.

He said his crack is fine heh.
But since his wires broke, he's looking for something that would inhance it the crack that he LIKES out of his PS3.

He said nothing about not having enough crack.

More snare wires changes the amount of snare sound and sensitivity of the snare.

The "crack" of the snare has very little to do with that, other then more snare sound will override the drum sound itself and more snare wires muffles the bottom head more.

"Crack" comes from head selection and tuning.

Crack is also what you smoke if you buy PureSound wires. The only good idea they have is the fat cat with the different tensioned wires. But the prices are absurd for what it is.

Anyway, you can modify the snare wires yourself. I like to use a 30, and cut out the middle 10. That makes a difference.. because it's changing the placement of the wires on the head. In this case, it allows a bit more punch when you lay into the drum.

Well I did buy puresound wires - only because I got my Gretsch Snare for dead cheap price and had extra money to spend over it. Also i was conned by salesmen into buying them.

Puresounds dont really do much with your sound IMO , they just give your snare wire tension know a little more room for acceptable tones , and make the snare sound I little more sweeter , all in all its nothing noticable and it will NEVER give you more crack (assuming you were replacing the same number of wires )

With the stock snare wires I had , I cut the middle strands out and tried it out , it dry's the sound and lets the body of the drum come out more as opposed to normal wires.

whats so bad about puresounds? its not the first time i've heard bad reports, but I use them, and I'm not sure what the big problem is?

nothing is wrong with them , they just dont make such a big difference

I Think with what Josiah said, I do crank my snare pretty tight on the batter, and snare wires both. Which did give me a tremendous sound, that I liked. The PS3 I like a lot, though I may try out the Ambassador as Aaron mentioned. Hm, but I still need to replace the wires cause the ringing and buzz is pissing the **** out of me. So puresound and fatcat a no go?

(noobish question)

Does anyone have a link, or something, that will show me the difference between different quantities of wires, thickness of wires, placement of wires, material of wires etc etc ???

This seems like a fairly comprehensive area, and i'd like to know more about it.

i just bought a set of custom 16 strands for my 14x6.5 brass snare
realised it's much brighter sounding than my 20 strands standard snares
is that normal?

more stands = darker? or brighter?
