Well I was watching VH1's "100 Greatest Rock Artists of All Time" and I was not happy/impressed. Great bands were low, crap bands were up there, and some bands did not even make the cut. Which brings me to my next point:
Now a band, the Melvins, was not on the list... and to my 17 year old musical brain, they inspired stoner rock/metal oh so much. The Melvins inspired a lot of grunge and plain old rock too. Think about it, they came out a long time before a lot of bands, so many people play/sound like them, and I hear A LOT of bands comment about their influence upon themselves...Yet they did not make the damn list. In or around the 80's who do you think influenced rock a lot? I think RHCP, Primus, Faith No More, and of coarse the Melvins rocketed certain genres of great music into the ears of future players. I know for a fact I missed a few bands, but my prime choice is the Melvins. Tell me who believe was/is a great influence. This is my first thread.

Make your own list if you're not happy about someone else making one. Mind you, they're completely useless and it's impossible for a list to be accurate to everyone's likings.

Rick Rubin has probably been the single-handedly most influential person on modern rock I'd say.

Well, maybe that will teach you to stop watching VH1.

I did make my own list with my band mates and sister, we were bored and angry. And plus besides the opinion part (which can always be bent and broken) I mean it is a fact that certain bands have done more for music than other bands on that list but, yeah I shouldnt watch VH1 should I? : / Oh man the Pixies...so true.

I don't think theres many compared to pre 70's "inspiring" bands after the 70's music just led off those bands who defined those new insprining genres which is a shame cuz more bands should know how to be more orignal and clever by now,IMO it seems bands like dream theatre, rhcp, nirvana and oasis(britpop etc)

Green day almost singlehandedly inspired the 90's pop-punk revival with Dookie.
Uh, yeah, Radiohead and Jeff Buckley have influenced a lot of the alternative pop/rock outfits around today with their male falsetto vocals, that whole wing of brit-popish artists that are still popular today, probably even touching as modern and mainstream (and lame) and James Blunt.
Tool were pretty much avatars to the nu-metal thing, and influenced many of the biggest nu-metal artists.
What have we got these days? Oh, "metalcore", I don't know In Flames and the rest of the gthenburg sound served as inspiration for the vast majority of new metal styled and metalcore acts today with the harmonised riffs and such. Iron Maiden being the obvious original source of that particular style of metal.

If the melvins were before '78? Then I agree they influenced Janes Addiction. If not Gang of four were way more influencial. They even influenced REM, RHCP and Fugazi. It was even written in the booklet of the album Entertainment!. Flea wrote a huge quote about them inspiring him.

Well if that's the case then add AC/DC to the list because their Back in Black album was in 1980 (which many current rock bands list as an influence)
Other bands:
Ozzy Osbourne (solo career)
Iron Maiden
Metallica

Actually, that was Freddy Mercury's doing.

Nah, Mercury had a lot broader of a style, more weapons to choose from; personally, I'd attribute the whole alt craze for whiny vocals to Yorke. Either way, both artists are extremely influential in their own right.

Yorke was heavily influenced by Jeff Buckley. So if you attribute it to anyone, make it him. Especially since Yorke's voice is so much weaker than Buckley's.
