I love 18" Kicks!

I love the dynamic range of an 18" kick especially when recorded you can hear how great and expressive they really are. The thing I love is how round the bass frequencies are , and how well defined you can get them. Hitting my 18" hard is like punching envelopes of bass into the music , yet when I roll off some power into the kick , it comes back into an open tone again.

18" kicks are highly underated , the only real sound im missing out on is a big *** dull thud , and im not really keen on that sound.

Nice, but you only have your Jarrah Bass right?

What do you think of that Gretsch Brass?

Atthe moment funny enough I am rocking this cheapass 22" rydeen bass drum and my lovely gretsch snare.

The Gretsch snare is very nice. Its fat sounding , lively and responds to tuning in any range very well. I got the shop store dude to quickly tune it up when i bought a new ambassador to replace stock. Even from his vague tuning people in the store came up to me and commented that they loved the sound.

Rock the F*** out, my customs are Pomelle Sapele, Absolutely beautiful wood, but as to the thread, I can't stand 18" basses live, I littleraly can't hear an 18" bass over a medium volume band standing pressed against the stage, they work for recording but they just don't have the volume.

With a mic on them, they're 10x better live though. FOH guy will love you for bringing an 18 with a ported reso.

At the moment yes it is, i had been without a kit for some time and I saw an add in the paper for selling a 22" rydeen bass drum cheap. Its at jamroom atm and I carry my snare and cymbals to and from there.

The gretsch snare looks much nicer and richer in real life. Its probably my favourite snare right now , fat and sensitive.

18"s are pretty cool, but definitely a specific kind of sound, not for everything. I've personally found that they sound best tuned rather high.

The thing is that the quilting comes out in different ways from wood to wood.

it can vary from this.....

With mic'ing on stage , or recording you can actually bypass the volume issue and get most sounds you'd want out of them

FockerTheLopper
09-18-2006, 09:46 PM
Yeah the only problem with them is that you can't get enough volume to play really loud music without hitting too hard.

White Riot!
09-18-2006, 09:56 PM
Thats only if your tuned low , in which case you'd need to mic up to compete with bigger bass drums , but even then you'd never match them for that sound.

An 18" kick tuned up is fat and loud. I guarantee it!

Yeah my teacher has a low tuned for latin drumming so he can muffle it himself(holding the beater in) but when its tuned up you ussually don't get that low boom and even if you do its still not as loud

Ahhh!

He's muffling it and leaving it open with his foot.... now that is a sign of some one who knows latin playing.

I love the sound of the 18 that I tried. But I've been told by a few people that they don't have enough low end or volume for Metal or Rock. Being that I'm in a thrash/punk band now as well as a prog/stoner metal project I wouldn't want that. But I dunno... 10 inch toms can be more defined than 16 inch ones if you know what I mean.

I like the sound of 18s tuned fairly loose with some power behind the beater to give it a good smack. But then again... I like hearing them tuned kinda high as well.

I have a snare mic rearing to go , I just have no means of getting that into a computer to be recorded , If there was someone in brisbane I could rock up to their place I would plug it in and do some soundclips for ya's

Its a good snare , the hammering fattens the sound IMO

Ahahaha overheard -

Producer - "I just really want a particular drum sound for this song, hmmm.."
Engineer - "Lets ask the drummer what he thinks"
Producer - "I want a dull, thud with little tone.. something like a box but just a touch more, what do you recommend?"
Drummer - "Sounds like you need a CB kit."
Producer - "Alright then! I want a CB kit sound!"
