View Full Version : Gigantour Review

Last night I went to Gigantour, it was overall a pretty good concert, Lamb of god were awesome, and really got the crowd going, I left halfway through Megadeth seeing as how it was like 40 degrees, I don't really like them, and Mustaine's voice sounded like crap, and he was really sloppy.

Second Stage: Into Eternity
I got there just in time to see Into Eternity's set. Their singer was really, really good live. The only song I could recognize from them was Splintered Visions, but the other songs weren't half bad. The guitarists were really dissapointing though, some of the sloppiest guitar work I'd heard in ages. During Splintered Visions' solo nearly ever sweep was missed, as with most the other notes. Still, an ok set.

Main Stage openers: Overkill, Arch Enemy, Opeth
After about a 10 minute wait Overkill came on, they were fairly popular with the crowd. They were byfar the most cliche metal band ever. Every other word that came out of the singer's mouth was fck or old-school. The guitar player was really good, he had some pretty awesome solos, but the bass was inaudible, which was kinda upsetting seeing as how they were Thrash. The highlight of their set is when the chick in front of me pulled off her thong mid-song.

Me and my friend changed seats after Overkill on account of my friend kicked over this guys beer when we were walking away after the set, so we decided to not fight a 20 year old who was drunk, and went to sit with my friend Elliot. Arch Enemy had PA problems throughout their set. They wen't on without soundcheck and the drummer used the Overkill drummer's set. When they first came out they started with Nemesis, and you couldn't hear the guitars, but Michael Amott was like realy into it, so I kinda thought it was a joke at first. Luckily by the second song it was fine. As fate would have it though, the drums sounded like ****. The only thing you could hear were the bass drums and the snare. Besides that it was an overall good set, I was dissapointed when they didn't play My Apocalypse.

After them Opeth were on. They obviously were only able to play a few songs, they only ones I recognized were Baying of the Hounds and Deliverence. Mikael's growls sounded really good, but his clean voice was kinda shakey, and the fake acoustic guitar sound was really bad. Other than that they played a good set. Mikael was funny when he was talking in between songs. He was like "I smell weed" and immediately about 30 people threw something to the ground and started stomping on it. And after his second song which was all acoustic he was like "Yeah I know we're all pussy and that ****. But we like metal too. Enough to say if you don't like The Scorpians you're a ****ing cunt."

Main Stage Headliners: Lamb of God, Megadeth
What can I say about Lamb of God, other then that they were ****ing incredibly. Definitely the crowd favorite, even moreso than Megadeth. Randy really got the crowd going. They had a massive setlist, and an hour and fifteen minutes or so of playing time. The setlist was something like Ruin, Hourglass, Laid to Rest, 11th Hour, Blacken The Cursed Sun, Redneck, Pathetic, Again We Rise, Walk With Me in Hell, Now You've Got Something To Die For, Vigil, As The Palaces Burn, and they ended with Black Label, and the infamous Wall Of Death was performed.

Megadeth were the last band to play, I was already freezing before they came on, it was incredibly cold and I didn't have a jacket on.I stayed for about half of their songs then I called my parents to pick us up. Dave was incredibly sloppy in his playing, and his vocals weren't that good either. But he sounded really nice, and got the crowd excited. I didn't enjoy them much, I'm not huge on old school thrash. I heard the remainder of the set as I was waiting for my parents. They had a pretty big lights show, it was a little much, but the pyro was cool.

Overall it was a really fun concert, my favorite one yet. All of the bands were at least interesting, and the fans were into most of them. If Overkill had been replaced by say KsE or Shadows Fall that would've been nice, and if Opeth had been given a full hour like Lamb of God and Megadeth that would have rocked too. But for the most part it was awesome.

Nice, I want to go this year, but I can't. I went last year, it was pretty cool except for Megadeth sucking live.

I'm suprised you couldn't hear Overkill's bass, since loud bass has always been their trademark. The guy doing sound there mustn't have been familiar with the band :(

The one time I heard it was when he was the only one playing, but besides that nothing.

At San Diego, Overkill's bass was audible specially when they played that punk song.

Talking about cliche bands, I think LoG was the most cliche metal band I have seen, If it wasn't for the lack of alcohol abuse I would swear they were Pantera live(not musically, just the presence). Their act was much better than the Unholly Alliance one, but still they bore the hell out of me, I really don't think they have much to offer. I have to admit they were the crowd's favorite band of the night.

Megadeth was great and Arch Enemy was...meh.

Hah, the Mikael jokes cracked me up.

I'm not surprised they got so little time to play, it was the same story at Sounds of The Underground last year, but oh well. 30 minutes of Opeth is just as good as an hour in my opinion.

Into Eternity being sloppy surprises me since they're pretty precise on record.

And where the hell did Overkill come from?

Right, because precision on record translates DIRECTLY to precision on stage. ;)

Hmmm, any way of hearing how their fake acoustic guitar sounded? Cause I've heard acoustic simulators that sound damn near the real thing.

Opeth better get their 5 songs, or else somebody's gonna get hit.

Why? Sorry if I'm not too enthusiastic to see the Dave Mustaine 3-ring circus...if it was actually Megadeth, then maybe I'd be excited, but this is basically a Megadeth cover band fronted by a washed up Dave Mustaine.

I was actually moreso aiming at Overkill being called generic. The negative comments towards Megadeth were only extra.

I think you guys are misinterpreting what I'm saying about Overkill. I didn't mean musically, I meant their attitude. Like every other word from the singer was **** or some other curse word, and he was obsessed with being old school. I thought it was kinda funny how he was like we don't need anyone, then his next sentance "****ing thanks guys, without you ****ing fans we wouldn't ****ing be here. **** YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!."

I would love to be there early, but circumstances won't allow it.

By the way, my show has all bands on only one stage, so order and time bands go on will be a bit different.

Wait, Into Eternity opens?

Sweet. We're gonna get there about 3 hours early after we showed up late last year, and everybody wanted to get front row for IE. Now we can, since they're the openers.

I went to the show in Devore (SoCal) and I enjoyed most of the bands there.

I didn't appreciate Overkill for some of the above mentioned reasons (like singing about how they don't care what we say, but then saying how important the fans are to the band.) In fairness I really did like the drumming though. Very tight and precise.

Surprisingly enough, Arch Enemy didn't appeal to me due to a crappy set list of obscure songs. The only good songs they did were We Will Rise and The Dead Bury Their Dead. Angela still look freakin' hot though. The solo's were pretty badass live.

Opeth did a really good show, opening with the usual (or so I hear) Ghost of Perdition. This is one of my fav. songs by them so I found it a real treat to experience it live. Other songs included The Leper Affinity and Deliverance.
Mike was pretty damn funny between songs. IE:
It's very beautiful here. But no one really gives a damn about nature anymore and neither do we. We just want to play some great tunes for you, so let's get this damn thing over with.

Lamb of God was really good. They played A LOT of fan favs. including Laid to Rest, some of Ashes of the wake, 11th hour, Ruin, and Black Label. They played some stuff off of their new album and I was impressed by them. They did a 90 min set so LoG fans shouldn't be disappointed.

Megadeth was probably the best band up there. They did some really good songs including Peace Sells, Sweating Bullets, and Holy Wars.
Their new material was interesting to say the least and I'm very interested in buying the new album here soon. I was shocked that Dave actually learned how to sing. The dueling lead guitars between Dave and Glen Drover was awesome (I'm a sucker for harmony lead guitar) and the pyrotechnics seemed to really add to the songs. Very good show indeed, hellava lot better than Ozzfest currently is IMO.

I think either Sanctity or The Smashup did, but I got their around 4:45 and it started at 4, so they played relatively early.

I was there. During Overkill's set the lead singer pointed out to some dude in an Overkill shirt rocking out and that made that guys life. Funny to watch.

I remember Mike saying something more along the lines of "It's very beautiful here, you know what it reminds me of?......****ing." Eitherway, I really enjoyed their set. They could have been louder though.

LoG was very good out the gate but couldnt hold my attention for more than 25 minutes. They were BOOOOORRRRIIINNG!!!!!

Megadeth stole the show though. I didnt know most of their material but had a great time watching them.

I got there right when Arch Enemy was halfway through their set, and they were the 4th last band. They were okay but I don't really like their music that much.

Then Opeth came on and when they started Ghost of Perdition I couldn't even tell what song it was because the arena has such a bad echo. The soft parts of their songs were great though, and most of all Deliverance was crushing.

LoG was fine for like a few minutes but seeing them live really shows how repetitive their music is. The crowd was going crazy.

Megadeth had to be the best but I left after a few songs because I just plain didn't want to be there. I've seen Megadeth and I knew what they were all about. On top of that I had a headache.

I was so pissed I didn't get there early enough for Into Eternity or Overkill.

I got to the Chicago one right before Arch Enemy as well. They were pretty good, Opeth was good (but the worst of the three times I've seen them) , LoG sucked, and Megadeth was amazing.
