Okay guys, I have been bursting to dish this out all week!
Here is a story and a half.
And this is the way I've been tellin it...
:)
I've been recording my originals at Mr.Zee's for the past while. A few of you know I recently got the Projectmix.
I thought it would be fun to do a cover for a change, originals seem on track, so I chose one of my fave Dylan songs, "I Shall be Released".
Which I did, and you've possibly noticed the thread.
Well last Friday I was supposed to go away for the weekend. But I was still sitting in front of my puter on Sat. afternoon at 2pm.
Why? Cause I was really liking the way the recording was turning out, and playing with the mastering chain.
So if not for the recording I wouldn't have been home, and if I hadn't been home, I wouldn't have had this happen....
As I was 2 minutes from leaving, bag in the trunk, Oscar starts barkin, there's a car in the driveway. I thought at first it was
a girl I dated recently, similar car, but out pops a guy who informs me that he's a photographer scouting for a film location.
After some discussion of how it works, he tells me the movie he's working with to film here...
THE FREAKIN BOB DYLAN MOVIE showed up at my doorstep, as I was just finishing my bob song, or so I thought.
Laurent was very friendly, and listened to ma choon. He told me the director may be interested in my cover, that I should give
him a copy when
he comes. Which I did today...
:)
With a bunch of my originals...
Now the karma of the week did not stop there, and don't ask me how this relates to the shooting this week, but I tell you,
this was one freaky week for me all around.
I did get away, btw, but came back Monday when I found out the shoot was on!
Look, I know that nothing may come of this except great memories and great stories... wait!
a lot has come of this already! I went from being a doof tooling at home on his Bob cover, to having it in the hands
of the director of his movie by a week after deciding to record it.
Thats weird my friends, beyond passing strange, and the luck all week has been scary, be assured.
What can it mean? That I'm getting a call from beyond? I wouldn't tend to think so... but let me go on..
Tuesday, I went to tell a neighbour what was going on, and after I told him about the movie coming as I was mixin my bob song
and was walking away home, he asks me if I know a song that he said he had in his head the past two weeks, and he starts to
sing a few lines..
"anyday now, anyday now.."
I tell you the freakiness just doesn't end there.
Aside from this, I have to thank some people who helped me out beyond immensely this week, and I don't mean to be gay about this,
but really owe heartfelt thanks to some people for their support with getting the demos together..
Gotta thank Brad, Chris, and Pete for their work on the song!
B and C did their parts like the pros they are, came in cold and had the takes you hear in the song in 2 tries, no edits! Great guys on top of it too, I enjoyed working
with you guys this week too much.
Petey, I have to apologise, in the huge rush, I haven't had time to edit the 5 hours of work you did, but can assure you it will be done.
Randy, thx for da usual support, and the equipment lends, dude comes thru!
Danimal, I appreciate the effort, Biff the desire, Peter for comin out and layin grooves for 80 degrees. We can do more again anytime.
To Rick, from Shameless for his efforts on 80. Also wanna thank Guy at La Tosca for his assistance too! What a week, and more to tell.
Yesterday morn, I got nervous about handing in my effort at mastering the song, and I called one ad in MMS for Mr. William Kontos' studio down on Amherst, Wax Records! The man has one serious studio! I can tell you this because based on my fun story related to him on the phone, he took a chance
and had me out last nite from midnite to 4am mixing my song with his engineer on my burned Nuendo files.
He hadn't even heard the song, and HE JUST WANTED TO HELP, NO MOOLA.
He does not ordinarily do this but is definitely out to help local talent, and with his affordable rates, anyone can have access to what I saw there, which was one hell of a setup, warmest vocal booth I may ever see. His Engineer Adam was super-nice, and patiently mixed and mastered the song til 430 am. The cd needed to be given today, day of shooting, 7am. It was. FYI I brung Billy a 24 of Blue Dry, and 12 Brahma beers too. I am pretty spent, but didn't want to just freeload.
Now I'm leaving another freaky thing to relate, and the best for last you might say!
Yesterday, after exchanging niceties with Mr. I on the board, I wrote him asking him to call me. He did, and gave me the final bit of synchronicity
to seal the week with a crescendo! Number one it was nice enough that he got in touch, but he proceeded to ask me if I had gotten an email from him yesterday in my myspace account. I hadn't checked it yet. Apparently, we both decided to end our falling out on the same afternoon, unbeknownst to one another.
Amazing!
And D came over last nite, and it was really cool to spend time with him! (you!) Really, my feeling was that it was a pleasure to work with him, really an amazing week, D saw, I was nearly hyperventilating over the weeks events, and yes, we even laid down some backing vox together for ISBR, and
I have some MORE edits to do once I fall asleep for the first time in 2 days! I have now slept 3 hours in 3 days, basically, and the ****e at the periphery
of my vision is starting to be tweaky, if you've even been this wiped..
But they just filmed today. Cate Blanchett wasn't changing in my bedroom , alas. A short scene was filmed at my place today.
Originally I had supposed it might be a scene of Bob's childhood home in Minn. or something, but it turned out to be Woody Guthrie's home as a child,
and he was watching the freakshow passthru town out my window. They had vintage trucks for this. I took pics and movies :)
WGuthrie was played by a young black boy who was very sweet, and was nearly obviously a veteran, everyone on set was pro.
And I met some great musicians on the set, exchanged numbers, even cd's with em, a couple of them are guitarists, and
would love to come to the hoped-for jam within a few weeks, if available. They be busy peeps.
So that was my insanely delightful and crazy week. Me the dog have a quiet house. They were so nice, they left me a basket of fruit,
and replaced a roll of TOILET PAPER, even, I noticed, after they left. Laurent, the photographer, was nicely informal and buddy-ish with
me the past few days, and he assured me this morn he is the closest person on set to the director, and he will put in a good word.
I told nearly everyone on set about my lucky week, and gave out 4 cd's that I made with labels and covers using pictures
I took of myself on the set in sepia. :)
Aside from this impression, I left them to do their work, was pretty tactful, and they all loved being here, and Oscar too!
I will now leave you to your thing...
Glad to share, hope you dug the tale, and ttyl.
Oh yeah, I checked the soundclick chart this morn, and isbr went from like 14 to #1 today on the cover chart.
Heh.
Capper.

ps: pics/movies later on my site.
